Students Perception Towards The Use of Calculator in Solving

The document discusses students' perceptions of using calculators to solve problems. It provides background on the history of calculators and their importance in mathematics. The study aims to determine students' views on how calculators (1) enhance solving skills, (2) aid in basic calculations, and (3) further understanding of solving concepts. It will survey 30 STEM students in Kidapawan City, Philippines on their perceptions of using calculators across subjects requiring problem solving. STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS THE USE OF

CALCULATORS IN SOLVING

Kate Jannine Dela Cruz

A Research Paper Presented to the Faculty and Staff

Of Senior High School Department of

Kidapawan City National High School,

Kidapawan City

2020
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Solving is important in our world; it is needed in everyday lives and

played an essential part in building our communities. According Merriam

Webster, solving is to find a solution, explanation, or answer for. People’s

thirst for knowledge in finding an absolute answer in Math world leads them

in creating a device that could perform calculations ranging from

basic arithmetic to complex mathematics and the device is called calculator

and was created in the early 1960s. This device can perform common

operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (Maxwell,

1981)

The calculator is a big help especially to those students who are more

engaged in mathematics subject. According to WhatIs.com, a calculator is a

device that performs arithmetic operations on numbers. The simplest

calculators can do only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. More

sophisticated calculators can handle exponential operations, roots, logarithms,

trigonometric functions, and hyperbolic functions. Internally, some calculators

actually perform all of these functions by repeated processes of addition. This

device contains a large screen with menu options, excellent resolution for

graphing, cut or paste command features, as well as many others, (Fischbeck,

1996).

Most calculators these days require electricity to operate. Portable,

battery-powered calculators are popular with engineers and engineering

students. An electronic calculator is typically a portable electronic device used

to perform calculations, ranging from basic arithmetic to complex mathematics.

Calculators allow more students to solve problems and appreciate the power

and value of mathematics in the world today. In this new era, students had

been using calculator inside the classroom to help them perform better in

subjects that involves solving.

The purpose of this study is to determine the students’ perception

towards the use of calculator in solving.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to determine the perception of

student towards the use of calculator in solving activity.

Specifically this study will:

1. Identify the subjects that require solving

2. Determine the views and stand of student in using calculator

in terms of:

a. Enhancing solving skills

b. Ability to perform basic calculations

c. Understanding the concept of solving

Statement of the Problem

The researcher will conduct this study to find out the perception of the

students toward the use of calculator in solving problems regarding numbers.

Specifically, it aims to answer these questions:

1. What are the subjects to that require solving?

2. What are the views and stand of student in using calculator

in terms of how to enhance solving skills, ability to perform basic

calculations and understanding the concept of solving?

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study is to determine the benefits of using

calculator for the following:

This will help student to be informed about the perception of other

students in using calculator in solving. This will help teachers to know the

stand and perceptions of students in using calculator. For other researchers,

this will serve as a useful reference for other researchers that will have the

related study about the student’s perception in using calculator in solving.

Scope and Delimitation

The main purpose of this study is to know the perception of students

toward using calculators. It uses descriptive approach to determine the

perception of students.

The study uses a simple random sampling and it will be conducted in

Kidapawan City National High School. There will be a respondents of 30

students coming from STEM strand that will answer the questions prepared by

the researcher through questionnaire.

Definition of Terms

Calculator is something used for making mathematical calculations, in

particular a small electronic device with a keyboard and a visual

display.

Perception is the way you think about or understanding someone or

something.

Solving means finding an answer to, explanation for, or means of effectively

dealing with a problem or mystery.
