Structural Mechanics Tutorial 1

The document contains a tutorial assignment on structural mechanics for civil engineering students. It includes 10 questions analyzing various structural elements like trusses, cables, and arches. Students are asked to determine member forces, tensions, reactions and other properties. They must state whether members are in tension or compression for several truss problems.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

CE-222 STRUCTURAL MECHANICS I
Tutorial Assignment # 1: Analysis of Trusses, Cables and Arches

1) Analyse the plane truss shown in Figure 1. State if the members are in tension or
compression.
2) Analyse the plane truss shown in Figure 2.
3) Analyse the plane truss shown in Figure 3. State if the members are in tension or
compression.
4) Determine the force in each member of truss shown in Figure 4. State if the members are
in tension or compression.
5) Determine the forces in all the members of the lattice (Complex) truss shown in Figure 5.
State if the members are in tension or compression. Suggestion: Substitute member JE by
one placed between K and F.
6) From the cable supported structure shown in Figure 6 (with a frictionless pulley at the
support at D), determine the reactions at supports A, D and E and the cable tensions NAB,
NBC, NCD and NDE. Also determine the total length of the cable.
7) Figure 7 shows a system of two inextensible flexible cables supporting a 10 kN platform
in a horizontal position. Calculate the support reactions and the maximum tension in the
cable.
8) The cable supports the uniform load of W0 = 600 kN/m shown in Figure 8. Determine the
tension in the cable at each support A and B.
9) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at A, B and C of the three-
hinged arch shown in Figure 9. Assume A, B, and C are pin connected.
10) The cable system shown in Figure 10 supports a uniformly distributed mass of 5 kg/m
along the horizontal. Determine the tension at B. Assume that the pulleys are frictionless.
