Experiment 5: Single Loop Pid Level Controller: Process Control & Instrumentation Laboratory BKF3791

The document describes an experiment to control water tank level using a single loop PID controller. The objective is to study level control of a self-regulating process. The procedure involves setting the PID parameters for the level controller LIC31 and observing the level response to disturbances at different settings. The best PID settings are determined by evaluating which settings result in the level damping to the set point within 3 cycles and ±2mm of the set point without oscillation.

EXPERIMENT 5: SINGLE LOOP PID LEVEL CONTROLLER

OBJECTIVE
To study water tank level control using single loop PID level controller.

FIGURE 5.1: Self-Regulating Level Process

EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

1. Switch ON the operator workstation. (Press the Acknowledge button to silence the alarm
buzzer sound if any).
2. Select Self Regulating Level Process.
3. Set LIC31 controller to PID control.
4. Call up the controller faceplate of LIC31and set control loop to Manual Mode. Enter the set
point of 400 mm.Gradually adjust the output, (MV) so that the level in the tank T-31 matches
the set point (within ±2mm). Let the process stabilize.
5. Open LIC31 Detail faceplate and enter the first trial PID tuning parameters as follows:
Gain (100/P) : 30
Reset (I) : 30 seconds
Rate (D) : 0 second
6. Put the control loop into Manual Mode.

7. Call up the Process History View for LIC31 from its Detail faceplate. Observe the response
for the level changes in the tank. Wait for the level to reach the set point.
8. Perform Level Load Disturbance as follows:
 Switch LIC31 controller to Manual Mode and decrease its MV by 10% for 20 seconds.
 Switch LIC31 controller back to Auto Mode.
9. At the LIC31 Process History View, observe the Tank T31 level response similarly.
10. Repeat procedure 4 – 9 with different PID setting as shown in Table 5.1 for Trial 2, 3 and 4.
For Trial 5, enter your own values for Gain, Reset and Rate.
11. Enclose the LIC31 level trend response in each trial and compare the response with the
different PID setting and comment in the observation column.

DISCUSSION

1. Which is the best PID setting for the process?

2. Is it possible to use only PI controller in the process system? Explain briefly either yes or no.
