Introduction:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and government directives, schools across the country are
opening late, resulting in a short academic year 2020-21.

The Aga Khan University Examination Board (AKU-EB) has been proactively responding to the
pandemic situation. Following international best practices, AKU-EB has rationalised the exam
specifications for Annual and Re-sit Examinations 2021 and engaged with school leadership and
teachers of affiliated school to validate the same.

Finalised after thorough consultation with experts and teachers, this document provides the exam
specifications for all subjects offered for SSC II.

English Compulsory SSC Part II

The English Compulsory Exam for SSC Part II will consist of two papers of 75 marks in
total. Paper I will have 30 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes (1 hour).
Paper II will consist of constructed response questions and two extended response essay
type question worth 45 marks to be attempted in 120 minutes (2 hours).

Paper I 30 marks

Paper I will have two separate sections:

 Listening comprehension section will be of 14 marks. This part will consist of two
passages having 7 MCQs each and is to be attempted in 30 minutes.

 Reading comprehension section will be of 16 marks. This part will consist of two
passages having 8 MCQs each and is to be attempted in 30 minutes.

Paper II 45 marks

This paper will be of 45 marks with the following tasks and marks allocation:

 A reading passage followed by constructed response questions 17 marks

 Formal writing (a choice of any ONE from formal email OR formal letter)
10 marks

 Essay writing (a choice of any ONE from expressive, persuasive, reflective and
analytical essays) 18 marks

The candidates will be asked to give an elaborate response to the essay question. Their
responses to the writing composition questions will be marked against the given tasks. Rote
memorization and reproduction of irrelevant details will be discouraged. Responses will be
marked for their content relevance, structure, vocabulary, expression and overall impression.

(Students should NOT mention their names, names of their schools or any other form of
identification anywhere in the examination paper)

Note: The Cloze Passage section and report writing may be taught as classroom activity but
will NOT be assessed in the examination.

Literature in English SSC Part II
The Literature in English Exam for SSC Part II will consist of one paper of 75 marks in
total. This paper would be comprised of three sections; plays, essays and poetry. Each
section will consist of constructed response questions and two extended response
questions (a choice will be given in the extended response questions).

Section I: (Plays)

Section I will have two parts A and B, representing the two recommended plays. Students will
attempt one of these parts. This section will be of 25 marks with the following tasks and marks
allocation:

A reading passage from the play followed by constructed response questions. 10 Marks
Two questions based on theme, plot, setting or characters which imply an 15 Marks
extended response.
Students will have to attempt only one question.

Section II: (Essays)

Section II will be of 25 marks with the following tasks and marks allocation:
Constructed response questions from the recommended essays. 10 Marks
Two questions based on theme, setting, symbolism or author’s viewpoint 15 Marks
which imply an extended response.
Students will have to attempt any one question.

Note: The following plays will NOT be assessed for the examination session of
Annual and Re-sit 2021. These plays can be taught as a classroom activity on the
discretion of the school and teachers.

Section III: (Poetry)
Section III will have 25 marks in total. It will be comprised of the following
tasks and marks allocation:
Reference to context questions from the recommended poems. 10 Marks
Two questions based on theme, setting, symbolism, figurative language or 15 Marks
author’s viewpoint which imply an extended response.
Students will have to attempt any one question.

Note: The following poems will be NOT be assessed for the examination session of
Annual and Re-sit 2021. These poems can be taught as a classroom activity on the discretion of
the school and teachers.

• Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day

• When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Exist
• To the Cuckoo
• Opinion and Knowledge

Note: Schools will select one of the two novels in class IX and one of the two plays in
class X for assessment purposes. Questions will be set on all the novels and plays to allow
students the option of answering questions on the texts they have studied.

Each question will be in structured question format involving either short answers or longer
essay-type response. There will be one structured question for each set text.
