Expt - No.4 Modelling of Axial Flow Compressor AND Turbine

This document describes the modeling of an axial flow compressor and turbine using SolidWorks. Key steps include: 1) Sketching the shaft profile and revolving it to create the 3D shaft. 2) Positioning the compressor blades at 40mm and 140mm from the origin and importing the airfoil profile. 3) Sketching the compressor blade profiles at 80mm height with 20mm chord and lofting the surfaces while twisting the blades 40 degrees. 4) Similarly creating the turbine blades positioned at 300mm from the origin by importing the airfoil, sketching the profile, lofting and twisting 40 degrees.

4 MODELLING OF AXIAL FLOW COMPRESSOR AND

TURBINE

Aim – To model the Axial Flow Compressor and Turbine

Commands used –

1. Sketch
2. Revolve
3. Extrude Boss
4. Circular pattern
5. Rotate

PROCEDURE:

5.a) AXIAL FLOW COMPRESSOR

1. Select the front Plane-Sketch the profile as shown in figure to create shaft. Total
shaft length is 370mm.

2. Use ‘Revolve ‘feature to convert the 2d sketch profile to 3d revolve.

3. The staging for the Compressor blades are 40mm and 140mm from the point of
origin.

4. Now, import the Compressor Airfoil and convert the entity.

5. Sketch the profile for the first and second compressor stage with new plane
height of 80mm, with a chord length of 20mm.

6. Loft the surface and twist the blade with 40degrees twisting.

7. Pattern the blades using –Circular array – 30 instances.

5.b) MODELLING OF TURBINE

1. The staging for the Turbine blades are at 300 mm from the point of origin.

2. Now, import the Turbine Airfoil and convert the entity.

3. Sketch the profile for Turbine with new plane height of 80mm, with a chord length
of 20mm.

4. Loft the surface and twist the blade with 40degrees twisting.

5. Pattern the blades using –Circular array – 30 instances.
