Acceleration Practice Problems (2) - 2020

This document provides an introduction to acceleration problems. It defines acceleration as the change in velocity over time using the equation a = (vf - vi)/t. It then provides 10 practice problems asking students to calculate acceleration given changes in velocity and time. Students are instructed to show their work and box their final answers.

Acceleration Practice

problems
Equations:
Acceleration is equal to the change in velocity in a given amount of time.

The equation is

vf −v i
a=
t

Where v f =final velocity

Where vi =initial velocity
Where t = time
And where a = acceleration

Using the base formula and literal equations, you can solve for any of the variables in the
equation.

Use the above information and lecture information to complete the following
problems. In order to receive credit for this worksheet you MUST show
your work using the GUESS method. You must also place a box around
your final answer. You can use a calculator but you must show all of the
steps in the spaces provided.

G- Given variable
U- Unknown variable
E- Equation needed
S- Substitute
S- Solution
1) Calculate the acceleration of Josh riding his bicycle in a straight line that
speeds up from 4 m/s to 6 m/s in 5 seconds.

2) Ariel dropped a golf ball from her second story window. The ball starts from rest
and hits the sidewalk 1.5 s later with a velocity of 14.7 m/s. Find the average
acceleration of the golf ball.

3) Cody’s car accelerates from 0m/s to 45 m/s northward in 15 seconds. What is

the acceleration of the car?
4) Dean is slowing down on his skateboards. He starts at a speed of 5.5 m/s and
slows to 1.0 m/s over a time of 3.0 seconds. What is Dean’s acceleration?

5) A fish swimming at a constant speed of 0.5 m/s suddenly notices a shark

appear behind it. Five seconds later, the fish is swimming in the same
direction at a speed of 2.5 m/s. Calculate the fish’s acceleration.

6) Kaya is riding her dirt bike eastward on a dirt road. She spots a pothole ahead.
Kaya slows her car from 14.0 m/s to 5.5 m/s in 6.0 s. What is her acceleration?

7) How long would it take Jesse with an acceleration of -2.50 m/s2 to bring
his bicycle with an initial velocity of 13.5 m/s to a complete stop?

8) Justine starts ice-skating from rest at the Lloyd Center. What is her final
velocity if she accelerates at a rate of 2.0 m/s 2 for 3.5 seconds?

9) The elevators in the Landmark Tower, in Yokohama, Japan are among

the fastest in the world. They accelerate upward at 3.125 m/s 2 for 4.0 s
to reach their final speed. If these elevators start from rest, what is their
final speed?
10)A cyclist accelerates from 0 m/s to 8 m/s in 3 seconds. What is his acceleration? Is
this acceleration higher than that of a car which accelerates from 0 to 30 m/s in 8
seconds?
