Test 2 (Semester 1)
“My husband repudiated me when I was three months pregnant », said Khadija, a 30 years old woman
from Rabat. She added: “as soon as he did, he threw me out of the family home. Both my parents were dead. I
had nowhere to go. Times were hard. It was difficult to find a job with a baby. Now, he is five years old and I
can’t afford to send him to school.
Under Morocco’s old family code, Khadija’s husband and thousands of other men could verbally divorce
their wives at any time, and their decision was legally binding. Now, all this is about to change. Under a new
family code or “Modawana” as it is known, husbands will have to go to court to make their repudiation binding.
Many people believe the new code will make a difference to the problem of abandoned women and children.
Under this code, whoever keeps the children keeps the marital house. So, they will no longer be on
streets. This is an important protection for women and children. It also puts women on a more equal footing
with their husbands, notably raising the age at which girls can legally marry from 15 to 18 giving wives “joint
responsibilities” with their husbands in family matters.
The code, which became law in 2004, and which also says polygamy can now be practiced under highly
restrictive conditions, replaced a family code that women’s groups said “turned women into perpetual minors
under the authority of men”.

Twenty years ago , many university students believed that once they had graduated, their education was
complete. They would get a job and all they had to do was to work hard with the same employer until it was
time to retire and rest after long years of work. Today, work isn’t like that . In the modern world, most young
people must expect to change employers several times in their working lives. Many of them will possibly
become self-employed , running their own businesses. This means that throughout people’s lives they will need
to acquire new knowledge and skills from the time they leave full-time education until after they retire . This
lifelong learning is necessary because the world of work is changing a lot faster than it used to . For example ,
nowadays employers often only employ staff on short-term contracts to complete a certain job. This keeps their
costs down. Once the job is over, the employees have to look for another organization to employ them on other
jobs.Aisha , who is married with two teenage children. She has a BSc in Information Technology ( IT ) and she
would like to go back to work when her children leave home. She wants to catch up with the latest developments
in IT and wants to get a Master’s degree in the subject. She can’t leave her family and become a student at a
university abroad. What can she do? The answer for Aisha is “distance learning”.
Aisha heard of an organization that offered distance learning to students all over the world . The teacher
and student are in different places .She enrolled on one of its MSc courses and was delighted with the teaching
methods. Aisha’s professors communicated regularly. In the next two years Aisha hopes to get her Master’s
degree via using e-mail and video conferencing to get her degree.

In Morocco, a huge number of children are homeless. Thousands of young girls from poor families are sent
to work in houses in cities. However, they are often ill-treated and exploited; which makes them run away and live
in the streets. Also, many young boys and girls leave their houses due to family problems and poverty. Some of
them work hard to earn some money and others survive by begging from rich people. Street children live a
difficult life; very often full of danger. Non-governmental organizations make considerable efforts to reintegrate
them into families and schools, but experts say the problem is large and its root lies in poverty and difficult social
circumstances.
Touria is one of the girls who worked in houses. Her parents who lived in the countryside had some
financial trouble, so they sent her to work as a domestic in the city. Touria lived terrible conditions at work. She
worked all the day, slept in the kitchen and was beaten by her host family. As a result, she escaped from the house
where she was working and lived in the street because she could never go back home. One day, a lady found her
all in tears and helpless in the street, so she took her to Bayti. Now that she is given a shelter in this association,
Touria feels much happier and safer.
Hassan left his home and school at the age of 12 to live on the street. After his mother passed away, his
father married another woman who did not like Hassan to stay with them. She always made his father beat and
insult him. “The street is not a better place to live in, but I will not suffer from my father beating me everyday”
Hassan thought. Nobody gave a hand to Hassan; he worked as a porter in wholesale markets and sometimes he
gained little money from helping passengers at the train station.
The government and many non-governmental organizations have adopted a strategy of building centers to
shelter homeless children and reintegrate them into schools and families, yet the challenge is enormous. The
number of those children usually exceeds the centers’ capacities; there are not enough beds for all of them. Thus,
all citizens should act at once to rescue them.
