Captain of the Hosts
Who is He?
Isa 37:16 O LORDH3068 of hosts,H6635 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 that dwellestH3427 between the
cherubims,H3742 thouH859 art the God,H430 even thou alone,H905 of allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of
the earth:H776 thouH859 hast madeH6213 (H853) heavenH8064 and earth.H776

The term Lord of Hosts is cited 282 times in the Word of God. It is a
military term meaning “God of Battles”

Isa 31:5 As birdsH6833 flying,H5774 soH3651 will the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 defendH1598 H5921
Jerusalem;H3389 defendingH1598 also he will deliverH5337 it; and passing overH6452 he will
preserveH4422 it.

Our God is a Warrior. He is a fighter, and we are in His army. The call to
salvation is a call to enlist in God‟s army and war against the spirits of
darkness and their activity in this world. We must understand His
character to appreciate the Lord of Hosts. The Lord of Battles can tell us
exactly how to stand against the strategies of the enemy He can counsel
us on how to fight and how to win our victories.

is wonderfulH6381 in counsel,H6098 and excellentH1431 in working.H8454

The Lord of Hosts is referred in the New Testament as the Lord of Armies:

Jas 5:4 Behold,G2400 theG3588 hireG3408 of theG3588 labourersG2040 who have reaped downG270
yourG5216 fields,G5561 which is ofG575 youG5216 kept back by fraud,G650 crieth:G2896 andG2532
theG3588 criesG994 of them which have reapedG2325 are enteredG1525 intoG1519 theG3588 earsG3775 of
the LordG2962 of sabaoth.G4519

Rom 9:29 AndG2532 asG2531 EsaiasG2268 said before,G4280 ExceptG1508 the LordG2962 of SabaothG4519
had leftG1459 usG2254 a seed,G4690 we had beenG1096 G302 asG5613 Sodoma,G4670 andG2532 been made

If it were not for God‟s holiness in defeating the devil for us through Jesus
Christ at Calvary, we would be eternally lost in sin. He is the Lord of Armies
who wins the battles for us.

The Lord of Hosts keeps His promises

1Sa 1:11 And she vowedH5087 a vow,H5088 and said,H559 O LORDH3068 of hosts,H6635 ifH518 thou wilt
indeed lookH7200 H7200 on the afflictionH6040 of thine handmaid,H519 and rememberH2142 me,
 and notH3808 forgetH7911 (H853) thine handmaid,H519 but wilt giveH5414 unto thine handmaidH519 a
manH376 child,H2233 then I will giveH5414 him unto the LORDH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his
life,H2416 and there shall noH3808 razorH4177 comeH5927 uponH5921 his head.H7218

Isa 14:27 ForH3588 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 hath purposed,H3289 and whoH4310 shall
disannulH6565 it? and his handH3027 is stretched out,H5186 and whoH4310 shall turn it back?H7725

David knew the Lord of Hosts

David trusted in God‟s ability to fight his enemies and win his battles for
him. He became the champion of his nation and a legend in his own time
through the Lord of Hosts.

1Sa 17:45 Then saidH559 DavidH1732 toH413 the Philistine,H6430 ThouH859 comestH935 toH413 me with a
sword,H2719 and with a spear,H2595 and with a shield:H3591 but IH595 comeH935 toH413 thee in the
nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 of hosts,H6635 the GodH430 of the armiesH4634 of Israel,H3478
whomH834 thou hast defied.H2778
1Sa 17:46 ThisH2088 dayH3117 will the LORDH3068 deliverH5462 thee into mine hand;H3027 and I will
smiteH5221 thee, and takeH5493 (H853) thine headH7218 fromH4480 H5921 thee; and I will giveH5414 the

The Lord of Hosts judges Nations

Jer 11:20 But, O LORDH3068 of hosts,H6635 that judgestH8199 righteously,H6664 that triestH974 the
reinsH3629 and the heart,H3820 let me seeH7200 thy vengeanceH5360 onH4480 them: forH3588
untoH413 thee have I revealedH1540 (H853) my cause.H7379

Isa 2:12 ForH3588 the dayH3117 of the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 shall be uponH5921 everyH3605 one that
is proudH1343 and lofty,H7311 and uponH5921 everyH3605 one that is lifted up;H5375 and he shall be

One day our children will reap the harvest we are now planting; so let‟s be
deliberate in what we plant before the Lord of Hosts.
Jer 50:34 Their RedeemerH1350 is strong;H2389 the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 is his name:H8034 he
shall throughly pleadH7378 H7378 (H853) their cause,H7379 thatH4616 he may give restH7280 (H853) to the
land,H776 and disquietH7264 the inhabitantsH3427 of Babylon.H894

The Lord’s Hosts have a Captain

Not only does the Lord of Hosts have volunteers in His army, He has a
Captain.

Jos 5:13 And it came to pass,H1961 when JoshuaH3091 wasH1961 by Jericho,H3405 that he lifted upH5375
his eyesH5869 and looked,H7200 and, behold,H2009 there stoodH5975 a manH376 over againstH5048
him with his swordH2719 drawnH8025 in his hand:H3027 and JoshuaH3091 wentH1980 unto him,H413
and saidH559 unto him, Art thouH859 for us, orH518 for our adversaries?H6862

Only the Most High is worthy of praise; however, this Mighty One
commanded Joshua to worship Him. The Captain of God‟s hosts is Jesus
Christ.
Isa 44:6 ThusH3541 saithH559 the LORDH3068 the KingH4428 of Israel,H3478 and his redeemerH1350 the
LORDH3068 of hosts;H6635 IH589 am the first,H7223 and IH589 am the last;H314 and besideH4480 H1107

We are in a Spiritual Warfare

Eph 6:11 Put onG1746 theG3588 whole armourG3833 of God,G2316 that yeG5209 may be ableG1410 to
standG2476 againstG4314 theG3588 wilesG3180 of theG3588 devil.G1228
Eph 6:12 ForG3754 weG2254 wrestleG2076 G3823 notG3756 againstG4314 fleshG4561 andG2532 blood,G129
butG235 againstG4314 principalities,G746 againstG4314 powers,G1849 againstG4314 theG3588 rulersG2888
of theG3588 darknessG4655 of thisG5127 world,G165 againstG4314 spiritualG4152 wickednessG4189 inG1722
highG2032 places.

Our warfare is spiritual. It is not against people, but against the powers of
darkness. Some Christians refuse to get into an area of spiritual warfare,
and some have been carried away by the extremes. Many become weary
practicing spiritual warfare. They are fighting the devil and trying to win
a battle that is already won. What they need to do is shout and rejoice in
God. Jesus triumphed over Satan and destroyed his works at Calvary.
Satan‟s only weapon now against mankind is deception.
Col 2:15 And having spoiledG554 principalitiesG746 andG2532 powers,G1849 he made a shewG1165 of
them openly,G1722 G3954 triumphing overG2358 themG846 inG1722 it.G848

When man tries to enter into a personal conflict against Satan , using
human strength, he can never win. But we must exercise spiritual
warfare according to the word of God.

Jas 4:7 SubmitG5293 yourselves thereforeG3767 to God.G2316 ResistG436 theG3588 devil,G1228 andG2532 he
will fleeG5343 fromG575 you.G5216

I believe that in these last days, spiritual warfare will be intensified. More
and more, wickedness and viciousness will come against us. The Body of
Christ is going to bless the world. We are going to stand up with Jesus in
all His strength and win every battle.

Hag 2:6 ForH3588 thusH3541 saithH559 the LORDH3068 of hosts;H6635 YetH5750 once,H259 itH1931 is a little
while,H4592 and IH589 will shakeH7493 (H853) the heavens,H8064 and the earth,H776 and the sea,H3220
and the dryH2724 land;
Hag 2:7 And I will shakeH7493 (H853) allH3605 nations,H1471 and the desireH2532 of allH3605 nationsH1471
shall come:H935 and I will fillH4390 (H853) thisH2088 houseH1004 with glory,H3519 saithH559 the
LORDH3068 of hosts.H6635
Hag 2:8 The silverH3701 is mine, and the goldH2091 is mine, saithH5002 the LORDH3068 of hosts.H6635
Hag 2:9 The gloryH3519 of thisH2088 latterH314 houseH1004 shall beH1961 greaterH1419 thanH4480 of the
former,H7223 saithH559 the LORDH3068 of hosts:H6635 and in thisH2088 placeH4725 will I giveH5414

Biblical Strategies

Jehoshaphat’s Strategy 2Chron. 20:3-20

1. Setting ourselves to seek the Lord

Vs.3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast
throughout all Judah.

2. Proclaiming the greatness of our God

Vs.6-7 “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over
all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might , so that
no one is able to withstand You? Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of
this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham, Your
friend forever?”
3. Acknowledge our frailty

Vs.12 “O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great
multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon
You.”

4. The Strategy

Vs.15 “Listen, all of you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you King
Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: “Do not be afraid or dismayed because of the
great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God‟s.vs.17 “You will not need to fight
this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with
you, O Judah and Jerusalem! Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against
them, for the Lord is with you.”

5. Receiving the Strategy

Vs.18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and
the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshipping the Lord.

6. Executing the Strategy

Vs.20 so they rose early in the morning and went into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as
they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of
Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God and you shall be established; believe His
prophets and you shall prosper.” And he consulted with the people, he
appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the
beauty of His holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:
“Praise the Lord, for His mercy endures forever.” Now when they began to
sing and to praise , the Lord set ambushments against the people of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount Sier, who came against Judah; and they were
defeated

Gideon’s Strategy

1. Recognizing the presence of sin

Jdg 6:1 And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORD:H3068
and the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414 them into the handH3027 of MidianH4080 sevenH7651 years.H8141
Jdg 6:2 And the handH3027 of MidianH4080 prevailedH5810 againstH5921 Israel:H3478 and becauseH4480
H6440 of the MidianitesH4080 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 madeH6213 them(H853) the densH4492

whichH834 are in the mountains,H2022 and caves,H4631 and strong holds.H4679

Jdg 6:3 And so it was,H1961 whenH518 IsraelH3478 had sown,H2232 that the MidianitesH4080 came
up,H5927 and the Amalekites,H6003 and the childrenH1121 of the east,H6924 even they came upH5927
againstH5921 them;
Jdg 6:4 And they encampedH2583 againstH5921 them, and destroyedH7843 (H853) the increaseH2981 of

2. Recognizing the need for deliverance

Jdg 6:7 And it came to pass,H1961 whenH3588 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 criedH2199 untoH413 the
LORDH3068 because ofH5921 H182 the Midianites,H4080
Jdg 6:8 That the LORDH3068 sentH7971 a prophetH5030 untoH413 the childrenH1121 of Israel,H3478
which saidH559 unto them, ThusH3541 saithH559 the LORDH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 IH595

3. The Lord sends His Word

whichH834 was in Ophrah,H6084 thatH834 pertained unto JoashH3101 the Abiezrite:H33 and his
sonH1121 GideonH1439 threshedH2251 wheatH2406 by the winepress,H1660 to hideH5127 it fromH4480
H6440 the Midianites.H4080

Jdg 6:12 And the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 appearedH7200 untoH413 him, and saidH559 untoH413
him, The LORDH3068 is withH5973 thee, thou mighty manH1368 of valour.H2428
Jdg 6:13 And GideonH1439 saidH559 untoH413 him, OhH994 my Lord,H113 if the LORDH3068 beH3426
withH5973 us, whyH4100 then is allH3605 thisH2063 befallenH4672 us? and whereH346 be allH3605 his

4. The Lord prepares the heart

Jdg 6:25 And it came to passH1961 the sameH1931 night,H3915 that the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto him,

5. Obedience to the call (changes us from the inside out)

enemy. Spiritual mapping is like having a bright light focused on a
otherwise dimly lit area. It allows us to see how the enemy is strategizing
and exposes Satan‟s hidden agenda for that particular region or people
group.

We must be willing to fight for the most valuable of principles and

It is important to be firm in your understanding of spiritual mapping and

spiritual warfare. In almost anything you do, you will be challenged by
someone at some time, as to the work you are doing. Before you step into a
mapping and/ or spiritual warfare project, you need to know that you have
been called by God to do so. Know where you stand scripturally, not as a
means of defense, but as a confidence in what you are doing.

3. Where do Territorial spirits operate?

Today, when we scout our land, what are we looking for? What is the
spiritual land like? Do we have “camps” or strongholds of pornography?
Does our city have camps of homosexuality, alcohol abuse, drugs? Is our
city held by strongholds of poverty, debt, maybe greed? What camps have
joined forces in order to accomplish a greater work? Don‟t be fooled by
thinking that the camps of darkness don‟t strategize and even work
together. They do!

One of the major differences that separate Christian beliefs from those of
the pagan is our understanding and worship of one God. A religion of
monotheism worships one God, versus the worship and recognition of
many gods.

We see the account of God sending Moses to call down plagues upon Egypt.
Each plague demonstrated the power of the One True God, and the
impotency of the gods of Egypt.

1. When the Lord called upon Moses, the first sign He gave him was his
rod. His rod, which turned into a serpent, consumed the serpents
that had been rods of the magicians of Pharaoh. The serpent was the
symbol of royal authority to the Egyptians and was even a part of
Pharaohs crown. (Ex. 7:9)
2. Hapi was the god of the Nile, and he was powerless as God turned
the water into blood. (Ex. 7:17)
3. Think of the mocking of Heka, the female deity with a frog‟s head,
when God brought forth frogs into the land. (Ex.8:2)
4. Shu, the god of the air, was not able to stand against God‟s plague of
flies. (Ex.8:21)
5. The plague against the cattle was a direct assault also, as the
Egyptians worshipped cattle. (Ex. 9:3)
6. In the plague where boils resulted as Moses and Aaron threw ashes
from the furnace into the air, God blatantly mocked the gods Sutech
and Typhon. Their usual offering was the ashes of sacrificial victims.

Every time God had Moses speak to Pharaoh, He had to say, “let my
people go, that they may serve Me and worship Me”. Remember, the
bottom line for spiritual mapping and warfare is for the saving of souls,

Redeeming Authority

Use of authority is for purpose of redemption, from a heart

of compassion/love of the Father.

claim territory—king—conquering authority.
o We are given the shoe of authority, to redeem, given shoes of
redemption:
o Ruth 4:7-8 “7In the olden times in Israel, this is how they
handled official business regarding matters of property and
inheritance: a man would take off his shoe and give it to the
other person. This was the same as an official seal or personal
signature in Israel. So when Boaz's "redeemer" relative said,
"Go ahead and buy it," he signed the deal by pulling off his
shoe.”
o Ministry of reconciliation: “All things are of God, who has

 Redeeming authority is about bringing humans close to God, not

about getting rid of the evil. We get rid of the evil to be closer, not for
 the sake of getting rid of evil or for the sake of war. God is not in a
battle.
 To be effective kings, we must be motivated by the Father‟s heart of
love and compassion; this motivation is born out of a personal
worship relationship with Abba and Jesus. Focus on beauty of God,
the majesty of God, the love of God, knowing our God. The
fulfillment of our priestly relationship.

Kings Administer Justice

justice (4941) every morning; rescue from the hand of his oppressor the
one who has been robbed, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire
because of the evil you have done—burn with no one to quench it.”

the cause of the needy.

Gentiles who are called by My name [shall be possessed, Amos
9:12], Says the LORD who does all these things.”

Imagine the difference when a team of believing Christians choose to

take their place as watchmen over a city mile. The Light of God, which is
in them, will begin to abide in this city mile because they simply walk and
believe that it is true that “every place that the sole of your foot shall
tread upon, that have I given unto you” (Joshua 1:3).
The purpose for this possession is to yield the harvest:
 1 Sam 8:12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and
captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his
harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his
chariots.

 Is 42:22 But this is a people robbed; they are all of them snared in
holes, and they are hid in prison houses. They are for a prey, for a spoil,
and none delivers and none says, „RESTORE.

 RESTORE [To bring back into existence, back into use; re-

 The oppressed of the earth are waiting for the mighty men, women
and children of prayer to cry “Restore!”
 The prisoners are waiting for those with the keys of freedom to insert
the key into the lock of the prison house, releasing many into the
kingdom.

Watching With Authority

Watchmen and Gatekeepers. There are three categories of

watchmen and gatekeepers: (1) spiritual watchmen, (2) spiritual
watchmen/gatekeepers, (3) civil gatekeepers
Spiritual watchmen:

(From Releasing Heaven on Earth: God’s Principles for Restoring the

Land, Alistair Petrie):
In most present-day prayer circles, intercessors are regarded as the
watchmen of a city. In many cases, though, watchmen are not only
intercessors but leaders. The watchman is the person who stands before
God on behalf of the land so He does not have to destroy it because of its
sins (see Ezekiel 22:30). The watchmen are also those posted to stand in
the gap between God and His people, to intervene on their behalf and to
sound the alarm when the enemy launches an attack. As Ezekiel 3:17
states, “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel;
so hear the word I speak and give them warning for me.”

Spiritual watchmen/gatekeepers and Civil gatekeepers:

(From Releasing Heaven on Earth: God’s Principles for Restoring the

Land, Alistair Petrie): Gatekeepers of the city do not consist only of clergy
and pastors. They include politicians, educators, economists, health
officials, media personnel and certain indigenous laypersons.
Gatekeepers are people of influence who can readily determine the ebb
and flow of what goes on in the life of their city. From Scripture we learn
that they are to protect the city, to make decisions concerning it, to discern
what is right and wrong, to determine the city’s direction, to govern it (at
times spiritually), to allow or deny entry to whatever form of influence
seeks to enter it, to remain vigilant at all times and not to leave their posts.
Nehemiah acknowledged the importance of gatekeepers following the
rebuilding of the wall: “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until
the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the
doors and bar them” (Nehemiah 7:3). First Chronicles 26 also gives insight
into the responsibilities of gatekeepers. Gatekeepers execute extraordinary
authority in the city and can appropriate Matthew 18:18-20 on a corporate
basis—for binding and loosing, and for asking the Father, in agreement, for
anything in Jesus‟ name.

The Doors to a City (If assigned, we can pray for the civil gatekeepers, as
well as be the spiritual watchmen/gatekeepers):

1. Church door
2. Legal door—includes police, lawyers, judges and anyone responsible
to care for the security of others
3. Education door
4. Commerce and business door: airport, banking headquarters
5. Political door
6. Door of influence—people of influence, such as sports figures, radio
and television personalities and regular media
7. Putting together your strategy

1. Gather all information together from team members

2. Separate it out according to groupings of sins which defile
the land.
3. Seek the Lord as to what the order of significance or priority
in each of the groups (there are layers, and importance
within the layers)
4. Identify the principalities/powers or spiritual wickedness
5. Look for linking powers that support the platform of evil
6. Seek the Lord as to the swords that will dismantle the sin
7. Seek the name of the Lord which we run into and are safe
8. Write your decrees: What does the Word say about that
particular sin
9. Write your proclamations of who God is in the midst. What
is His redemptive character it the midst of it.
10. Prepare well: Spiritually, physically, emotionally and
mentally.
