MATHEMATICS – Grade 9

Week 6
Topic: QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
Objectives:
a. to model real-life situations using quadratic functions
b. to represent a quadratic function using:
1. table of values
2. graph
3. equation

A quadratic function is a function defined by f ( x )=ax2 +bx +c , where a, b and c are real
numbers and a≠0. The graph of a quadratic function is a curve called parabola.

Here are examples of quadratic functions:

1. y=x ²+8x + 16
2. x 2+ y=4
3. y=x 2−2 x
4. x 2+ 4 x +4= y
5. 2 x2 + y =1

1
Now, study the function f ( x )=2 x +1

1 1 1 1 1 (differences in x)

x -2 -1 0 1 2 3
f(x) -3 -1 1 3 5 7

2 2 2 2 2 (differences in y)

The table of values for the linear function f ( x )=2 x +1 shows that equal differences in x
produce equal differences in f ( x ).

Now, study the function g ( x )=2 x 2 +1

1 1 1 1 1 (differences in x)

x -2 -1 0 1 2 3
g(x) 9 3 1 3 9 19

-6 -2 2 6 10 (first differences in y)

4 4 4 4 (second differences in y)

The table of values for the quadratic function g ( x )=2 x 2 +1 shows that equal differences in
x produce equal second differences in g ( x ).
