Week 6
Topic: QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
Objectives:
a. to model real-life situations using quadratic functions
b. to represent a quadratic function using:
1. table of values
2. graph
3. equation
A quadratic function is a function defined by f ( x )=ax2 +bx +c , where a, b and c are real
numbers and a≠0. The graph of a quadratic function is a curve called parabola.
1
Now, study the function f ( x )=2 x +1
1 1 1 1 1 (differences in x)
x -2 -1 0 1 2 3
f(x) -3 -1 1 3 5 7
2 2 2 2 2 (differences in y)
The table of values for the linear function f ( x )=2 x +1 shows that equal differences in x
produce equal differences in f ( x ).
1 1 1 1 1 (differences in x)
x -2 -1 0 1 2 3
g(x) 9 3 1 3 9 19
-6 -2 2 6 10 (first differences in y)
4 4 4 4 (second differences in y)
The table of values for the quadratic function g ( x )=2 x 2 +1 shows that equal differences in
x produce equal second differences in g ( x ).

x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2
f(x)
What are the differences between two adjacent x-values in each table?
B. Make a table of values of the following quadratic functions and draw the graph.
1. y = 2x² - 4x – 5
2. y = -x² + x + 6
3. y=x² + x -12
4. f(x) = -3x² -5x +2
5. f(x) = 2x² - 7x – 15
