This experiment aimed to determine Reynolds number as a function of flow rate and characterize fluid flow type in a circular pipe. The experiment used an Osborne Reynolds number apparatus with dye, stopwatch, and graduated cylinder. Reynolds Number

Introduction:
Reynolds (1883) was the first to propose a criterion for differentiation
between laminar and turbulent flows in his classic dye visualization
with the equation: NRe = u*d/ɤ and suggested a critical value of
NRe=2300 for the upper limit of laminar flow. Fluid flow can be
classified to three regimes: laminar, transitional and turbulent. The
laminar regime is a where the flow is characterized by fluid particles
moving in the form of lamina sliding over each other. It is a flow
characterized by smooth streamlines and highly ordered motion. The
turbulent regime is where the flow is characterized by constant
agitation and intermixing of fluid particles such that their velocity
changes from point to point and even at the same point from time to
time. It is characterized by velocity fluctuations and highly disordered
motion. The transitional regime is where the flow fluctuates between
laminar and turbulent before it becomes fully turbulent.

Objectives:
The objective of this experiment is to be able to determine the
Reynolds Number as a function of flow rate and to characterize
the type of flow of liquid in a circular pipe.
Used Equipments:
1- Osborne Reynolds Number Apparatus.
2- Dye.
3- Stopwatch.

4- Graduated Cylinder.

5- Digital Camera.

Procedure:

1. Fill the ink tube with blue ink.


2. Now lower the ink injector till it seen in the glass tube.
3. Connect the water tank to a water source to making sure that the
water level stays constant in water tank.
4. Now open the water valve with dye valve and let the ink or dye
leak to the glass tube until the slow flow is achieved.
5. Bring a graduated cylinder and set a timer when a cylinder gets
filled with water.
6. Let a cylinder filled in water to any volume while the timer is
running.
7. Stop the timer with closing the outlet valve.
8. Record the time and volume of water in cylinder.
9. Repeat the same procedure 2 more times for different type of flow
by controlling the valve.

Conclusion:
Reynolds number indicates that the type of fluid flow
can take three form of Laminar, Transitional, and
Turbulence depending on the density of the fluid,
viscosity, pipe diameter, and flow velocity which can be
experimentally tested on Reynolds apparatus.
