Introduction
Complex ions are ions that are formed when a central atom or ions is bonded to a group of atoms
bonded to a group of atoms or ions known as ligands by coordinate bonds. Ligands are species
that have at least one lone- pair of electrons that are readily donated to a metal atom or ion to
form a coordinate bond. Ligands are Lewis Bases. Most complexes of transition metals are
coloured. A substance appears coloured when certain wavelength of white light is absorbed. The
complementary wavelength gives the colour of substance.

Methodology
1. 100mL of NiCl2. 6H2O is put in seven (7) beakers.
2. 50mL of concentrated NH3 is added to test tube-2.
3. 30mL of en is added to test tube- 3.
4. 50mL of en is added to test tube- 4.
5. 80mL of en is added to test tube-5.
6. 50mL of dmgH₂ is added to test tube- 6.
7. 50mL of KCN is added to test tube- 7.
8. The appearance of the test solution is compared with the controlled beaker-1.
