This document contains 7 fluid mechanics problems involving hydrostatic pressure and forces on dams and gates: 1. Find the pressure at a given point with given water depth and specific gravity. 2. Determine the magnitude and location of horizontal and vertical pressure components on a sector gate. 3. Calculate the total thrust and its location on a sector gate with given dimensions and water level.

1. Find the pressure at A in Fig. shown below.

2. The sector gate shown in the figure consists of a cylindrical surface of which PN is
the trace, supported by a structural frame hinged at M. The length of the gate
perpendicular to the plane of paper is 9.0 m. Determine the magnitude and location of
the horizontal and vertical components of the total hydrostatic pressure on the gate.

3. A sector gate of radius 4.0 m and length 5.0 m controls the flow of water in a
horizontal channel. For the conditions shown in the figure, determine the total thrust
on the gate and its location.

4. A circular gate in a vertical wall has a diameter of 4.0 m. The water surface on the
upstream side is 8.0 m above the top of the gate and on the downstream side 1.0 m
above the top of the gate. Find the forces acting on the two sides of the gate, the
resultant force and its location.

5. A circular opening 1.2 m diameter in the vertical side of a reservoir is closed by a

disc which just fits the opening and is pivoted on a shaft passing through its horizontal
diameter. Show that, if the water level in the reservoir is above the top of the disc, the
turning moment on the shaft required to hold the disc vertical is independent of the
head of water. Find the value of this moment.

6. A concrete dam retains water to a depth of 20 m. The face of the dam in contact
with water is vertical for the 10 m from top of the dam and thereafter it is inclined at
12 ̊ to the vertical in order to increase the thickness of the dam at the base. Determine
the magnitude and direction of the resultant hydrostatic force per metre length of the
dam and its line of action.

7. The profile of the inner face of a dam takes the form of a parabola represented by
the equation 18z = x2, where z is the height above the base in metres and x is the
horizontal distance of the face from the vertical reference line in metres. The water
level is 27 m above the base. Determine the thrust on the dam (per metre width) due
to the water pressure.
