4. In a 132 kV circuit breaker the bushing to ground capacitance is 0.01 µF and the
transformer inductance succeeding the circuit breaker is 5 H. Calculate the voltage
appearing across the poles of the circuit breaker if it breaks a magnetising current of 10 A
flowing in the transformer.
5. In 220 kV system, reactance and capacitance up to location of CB is 8Ω and 0.025 µF. A
resistance of 600 Ω is connected across the contacts of CB. Determine (i) natural
frequency of oscillation (ii) damped frequency of oscillation, (iii) critical value of
resistance.
6. In a power system the rms voltage is 38.1 kV. L is 10 mH and C = 0.02 µF. Determine (a)
peak resinking voltage across the circuit breaker (b) frequency of restriking voltage
transient (c) average rate of restriking voltage up to peak restriking voltage, and (d)
maximum RRRV.
7. From the following data of a 50 Hz generator emf to neutral 7.5 kV (rms). Reactance of
generator and connected system 4 Ω, distributed capacitance to neutral 0.01 µF.
resistance negligible: find (i) the maximum voltage across the contacts of the circuit
breaker when it breaks a short-circuit current at zero current; (ii) the frequency of
transient oscillation; and (iii) average rate of rise of voltage up to the first peak of
oscillation.
8. A 50 Hz, 11 kV. three-phase alternator with earthed neutral has a reactance of 5.0 Ω per
phase and is connected to bus-bar through a circuit breaker. The capacitance to earth
between the alternator and the circuit breaker is 0.02 µF be per phase. Assuming the
resistance of the generator to be negligible, calculate the following. (i) Maximum voltage
across the contacts of the circuit breaker, (ii) Frequency of oscillation. (iii)The average
rate of rise of restriking voltage.
9. Calculate the RRRV of a 132 kV circuit breaker with earthed neutral. The short-circuit
test data obtained arc as follows: The current broken is symmetrical and the restriking
voltage has an oscillatory frequency of 20 kHz. The power factor of the fault is 0.3.
Assume the short-circuit to be a grounded fault.
10. In a short-circuit test, with earthed neutral on a 132 kV, 3-phase circuit breaker, the power
factor of the fault was 0.3, the recovery voltage was 0.95 of full-line value, the breaking
current was symmetrical and the restriking transient had a natural frequency of 16,000
Hz. Estimate the rate of rise of restriking voltage.
11. In a short-circuit test on a 132 kV, 3-phase system, the breaker gave the following results:
pf of the fault 0.4, recovery voltage 0.95 of full-line value; the breaking current is
symmetrical and restriking transient had a natural frequency of 16 kHz. Determine the
rate of rise of restriking voltage. Assume that the fault is grounded.
12. In a 132 kV. 3-phase, 50 Hz power system the line to ground capacitance is 0.04 µF and
the inductance is 4 H. Calculate (i) voltage appearing across the breaker pole when a
magnetizing current of 6 A is interrupted (ii) resistance to be connected across the breaker
contacts to eliminate the restriking voltage.
13. A circuit breaker is rated 2,500A, 1,500 MVA, 33kV, 3s. 3-phase oil-circuit breaker.
Determine the rated normal current, breaking current, making current and short-time
rating current.
14. A 50 Hz solidly earthed generated is connected to a power network through a C.B. and is
having the following data: emf to neutral 8.5 kV, reactance of the generator and
connected systems upto CB is 42 Ω and capacitance to neutral is 0.015 µF. Resistance
negligible. A 3-phase underground short circuit occurs at the outgoing terminals of the
C.B. If R is the first phase to clear the short circuit. Find (a) maximum voltage across the
contacts of R-phase when it breaks the current at zero pause. (b) average RRRV upto the
first peak of oscillation. (c) value of the resistance to be connected across the C.B. to
critically damp the oscillations.
15. An OBC is rated for 100 MVA, 2 kA, 66 kV, 3-phase, 3 sec. What are its (a) rated
operating voltage (b) rated operating current (c) rated symmetrical breaking current?
