Alhmadulillah, praise to Allah,I manage to successfully undergoing internship at Propel Network

Sdn. Bhd. in more or less than 16 weeks already starting from 16 November 2015 until 1 April
2016. This internship is a compulsory for all Diploma student of Universiti Teknologi
Malaysia,Kuala Lumpur (UTMKL) in order to complete their Diploma of their courses. As for
me,this internship is a must in order for me to settle down Diploma In Electrical Engineering
(Power) as guideline given by Faculty Of Electrical Engineering of UTM. The needs of this
internship is to applicate as what are already learnt by the students during the class session and
applicate them by practically during the period of internship.

Furthermore, the students need to prepare themselves with this report and presentation about their
internship experience in 5 months allocated by the university. This report is a part of the
assessment will be run by the lecturers and panels before finishing Diploma studies.

I would like to give a token of gratitution to Mr. Leong Wai Ming,Director Of Propel Network
Sdn. Bhd. for giving me the opportunity to undergoing internship at his company. Its been a
great honour to work with him as he already coop with a lot of up and down during running his
company for almost 7 years. I also would like to thank Mr. Hafizzul Azmeel Bin Mohd
Ariff, manager of Huawei UMobile project and also as my supervisor at this company for giving
me a lot of lesson and advice as I am working under his project through out the period. Despites
his absence around the office as he busy with meeting with UMobile manager,he manage to
spend times to teach us the correct ways on doing the task and correct us on the right track of the
work.

A best regard to the senior engineers, Mr.Deva, Mr Razman Ramalan, and Mr Anugerah Daniali
as they teach me a lot of new things about this field of working. At first,it was a bit hard for me to
get along with this work as i’m newly working here and still unclear of the job done. But,with
help of them,I manage to understand the job done and get to coop with it well. Also, they teach me
on good working ethic and time management well. In addition,I would thank to Puan Noor Diran

new experience in my life towards a wonderful life.

Thank you.
2.0 INTRODUCTION

Internship or also known as industrial training is compulsory for me in order to graduate as a

holder of Diploma In Electrical Engineering (Power). We are assigned to undergo internship at
any company that we choose by ourself, beginning from 11 Novermber 2015 to 1 April 2016 for
about 5 months. This internship is a must for the student for them to understand and applicate all
the lesson during the lecture’s session in real working experience.

This internship programme is to expose to student on working in real life days after their
graduation from university. Its important for them to prevent shock as they get too much of their
student life. For example of working field are Electrical Engineering,Mechanical
Engineering,Property Valuer,Quantity Surveyor, and Urban Regional Planner.

This 5 months internship experience is very important for the students to understand their field of
study deeper and even clear view. As in internship days, the student will learn to applicate their
learning in the classes into their work. For some reason, practical will give a different output
rather than theoretically. This is because, learning in class sometimes its hard to be understand
because the student need imagine somethings that they can’t even see with naked eyes. For
example, how to understand the movement of electrical current in a motor system?During
internship, the student can see the motor in front of their eyes and can give out some small
imagination of the current movement. This will aslo teach them to use the knowledge effectively
on their work.

Furthermore, internship also prepare the student towards working days. It automatically teach
them about their self discipline and be punctual at all time. Besides,it also help them to be more
confident when facing with all level of person. In addition,it also sharpen the student mind on
improving their soft skill which is not formally teached during the lecture. Problem which most
faced is on communicate well whether in English or Malay.
Problem faced is that some people can’t communicate well in English and some even can’t
communicate in Malay at all. By that, its up to student itself to solve the problem effectively so
that they can deliver the message needed to other people and the other people can understand it
well. After that, the student also will learn the integrity value during their work such as
honesty, dedicated, hardwork and other positive value to build a good character.

Finally, this Industrial Training give a chance for the student to work with senior engineers who
has already been in the field for a very long time. This chances is not easily obtain during their
working days as some company only accepted engineers with a few years experience to work
with them. They need to use this opportunity well to gain more experience.
3.0 OBJECTIVE OF INTERNSHIP

Internship teach the student to do their work in a correct procedure to give out a quality work as
needed by the company. Objective of internship are :

a) Exposing the students on a real life working experience suits with their courses thus
increasing their technical skill and student leadership.

b) Giving chances to the student to practically do their class lesson in their work

c) Anable the student to learn organization structure in a company and understanding

their roll towards the development of the company

d) Teach the student on decision making on their given task based on their learning.

DRIVE TEST TEAM AND OPTIMIZATION FOR PROJECT HUAWEI UMOBILE

For 14 weeks of internship,I was placed under project Huawei Umobile. The tests done on the
site is mobility tests and static tests. For this project we are acquired to use software named
Nemo Invex to perform the test.

Drive Test

All the data of the log file is given by the RF Engineer or also known as Drive Test Engineer
using Drive Test method. Drive Test is a test performed in cellular networks regardless of
technology (GSM, CDMA, UMTS, LTE, etc. ...). Means collecting data on vehicle movement.
The analysis of drive test are fundamental for the work of any professional in the field of IT and
Telecom comprising two phases that is as data collection and data analysis.

Although through the analysis of KPI's we can identify problems such as dropped calls and
among others however the drive tests allow a deeper analysis in field. It identifying areas of each
sector of coverage, interference, evaluation of network changes and various other parameters.
The hardware and software used in the test are

o A notebook – with software nemo analyzer

o Data card
o GPS
o Telephone (normally Nokia)

The main goal is to collect test data, but they can be viewed or analyzed in real tie during the
test, allowing a view of network performance on the field. Data from all units are grouped by
collection software and stored in one or more output files.
Drive Test Routes

Drive Test routes are the first step to be set, and indicate where testing will occur. This area is
defined based on several factors, mainly related to the purpose of the test. The routes are done by
the DTA or Drive Test Engineer before given to the DTE. The route is given using Google Earth.
It a good practice is to trace the route on the same using the easy paths or polygons. The final
iage can then be brought to the driver.

Example of route in Google Earth.

Some software allows the image to be loaded as the software background (geo-referenced). This
makes it much easier to direct routes to be followed. It is advisable to check traffic conditions by
tracing out the exact pathways through which the driver must pass. It is clear that the movement
of vehicles is always subject to unforeseen events, such as congestion and interdicted roads.
Therefore, one should always have on hand - know - alternate routes to be taken on these
occasions.
Drive Test Schedule

The test can be performed at different times, whether day or night. A Drive Test during the day
shows the actual condition of the network especially in relation to loading aspect of it. Moreover,
a drive test conducted at night allows you to make, for example, tests on transmitters without
affecting most users.

Types of Drive Test

The main types of Drive Test are:

 Performance Analysis

Tests for Analysis Performance is the most common, and usually made into clusters (grouping of
cells) that is an area with some sites of interest. They can also be performed in specific
situations, as to answer a customer complaint

 Integration of New Sites and change parameters of Existing Sites

In integration testing of new sites, it is recommended to perform two tests, one with the site
without handover permission - not being able to handover to another site - thus obtaining a total
visualization of the coverage area. The other, later, with normal handover, which is the final state
of the site.

 Marketing

Marketing tests are usually requested by the marketing area of the company, for example
showing the coverage along a highway, or at a specific region/location.

 Benchmarking

.Benchmarking tests aims to compare the competing networks. If the result is better, can be used
as an argument for new sales. If worse, it shows the points where the network should be
improved.
Procedure of Drive Test

1. Run the software program that is Nemo Analyzer

2. Set the port and devices. Plug in the data card, GPS tracker, Scanner and R99. The data
Card act as an internet modem. The scanner is to measure all used carriers or cells and
their corresponding DL scrambling codes.
3. Then set the script of the part that we want to do. For example if we want to collect data
for HSUPA, set the script to HSDPA. Each different part that we want to collect the data,
we must change the script.
4. After setting all the software and hardware, the we can run the test according to the GPS
tracker given by the DTA.
5. The data collected then save and recorded.
6. Datat will be uploaded to the Google Drive

MOBILITY

Mobility is a map coverage of the reception area of the assign site. In the map it included
the SCR and the range of telecommunication area weather we get higher reception or not.
From there we can conclude how much we need to change the angle of azimuth antenna.
There are 4 part in SSV report mobility that is Coverage Map by Scanner, Coverage Map by
Long Call, HSPA+ and HSUPA.

The mobility log file is divide into that is Pre and Post. Pre is before the changes than
been made. It show how bad are the reception in the covered area. In Pre only the primart
sector shown. Meanwhile Post are after the changes been made. It show how much the
reception have improve. In Post it show both primary and secondary sector as there added the
secondary to improve the network.

Both map are the example of the Pre and Post.

 Coverage Map by Scanner

In the scanner there a 3 type of map that is Best Server, Best RSCP and Best Eclo.

 Best Server

Above in the example of Best Server for Pre. There must be a different in colour for each SCR to
avoid the confusion of colors in the road.
 RSCP

RSCP or Received signal code power denotes the power measured by a receiver on a
particular physical communication channel. It is used as an indication of signal strength, as
a handover criterion, in downlink power control, and to calculate path loss.

As we can see the dark green colour show that the reception area at that place is good
,meanwhile the yellow colour show the decresing reception in that area.

 Ec/No

Ec/No is a Quality & Capacity measuring Metric. It generally gives us the idea how good or
bad the link quality is. It can also be known as pilot channel quality energy per chip over
total receive power spectral density.
 Coverage Map by Long Call

In the long call there are 4 part of map that is RSCP, Eclo, TX power and Sho. The RSCP and
Eclo in the same as Scanner map.

 TX power

TX power or Transmit Power Control is a technical mechanism used within some networking
devices in order to prevent too much unwanted interference between different wireless
networks . The idea of the mechanism is to automatically reduce the used transmission output
power when other networks are within range. Reduced power means reduced interference
problems and increased battery capacity. The power level of a single device can be reduced
by 6 dB which should result in an accumulated power level reduction.

This is the example of map of TX power. As u can see in the index beside the map, from the dark
blue color to red show the decreasing of reception.
 HSPA+

HSPA+ or HSDPA have two type of map that Throughput and CQI.

 Throughput

Throughput or network throughput is the rate of successful message delivery over a

communication channel. The data these messages belong to may be delivered over a physical
or logical link, or it can pass through a certain network node. Throughput is usually measured
in bits per second (bit/s or bps), and sometimes in data packets per second (p/s) or data
packets per time slot.

The throughput of a communication system may be affected by various factors, including the
limitations of underlying analog physical medium, available processing power of the system
components, and end-user behavior

Map above is the Post of HSPA+ throughput. The reception area of this area is not that good.
The color chart show the decreasing of coverage from green to grey. In HSPA+ Throughput the
grey color or zero throughput must not allowed.
 CQI

CQI stands for Channel Quality Indicator. As the name implies, it is an indicator carrying the
information on how good or bad the communication channel quality is. This CQI is for
HSDPA. (LTE also has CQI for its own purpose).

In HSDPA, the CQI utilizes link adaptation techniques to substitute power-control and
variable spreading factor.

As u can see this map got a zero throughput. it happened because the failure of the divice that DTE used
to collect the data. When they drive, somehow the internet connection suddently fail.

 HSUPA.

In HSUPA it only got Throughput. It is the same as HSPA+.

Justification Multisector HSDPA

Justification multisector HSDPA is a compilation of High Speed Downlink Packed Access that
have been drive for a several time to choose to choose the best that suit the KPI. The time of the
data taken also noted because the range of frequency is different. Below is the example of
HSDPA taken on different day and time.
Drive Test

All the data of the log file is given by the RF Engineer or also known as Drive Test Engineer
using Drive Test method. Drive Test is a test performed in cellular networks regardless of

TIMESHEET AND CLAIM PROCEDURE

At every middle day of the month (15th – 18th day),the Human Resources Department will ask us
on submitting our claim form and timesheet for the monthly salary procedure.Lateness of
submitting this 2 forms will bring us on lateness to receive the salary for that month. There are
few things that can be show about this procedure :

Timesheet which need to be filled

Example of Claim Form

Expenses type
9.PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED DURING INDUTRIAL TRAINING

1. Hard To Find Spot

During doing the test, its important to find a suitable spot with a good RSCP number to obtain a
good result. Its a bit hard to find some good spots as we need to move and stop until good spot is
found.

2. Building/Obstacle Blockage

It’s a need to find a clear spot so that we can ‘shoot’ the line clearly from the Data Card to The
Tower. So whenever there is any other obstacle etc : tree or building will effect on the results
obtain.

3.Shortage of Staff

At this company, most of the DTE are in contract for 6 months. So,shortage of staff are always
happened thus the available staff need to do more works and sometimes make and over time
work. This is to ensure that the project given by the Main Company (Huawei) is done in a given
period. For some reason, some of us sometimes didn’t get and enough rest.

4.Shortage of Car

For us to go to sites given,we are given a car provided by the company. The problem is when the
number of cars is not equal to the people to go to site. So,some need to share the cars, for day and
night shift. It is a worry if the car is overheated when the car is used for the whole day.The risk
of dysfunctional or break down is quite high.
10.SUGGESTION

This is some suggestion so that it will improve the company and makes university internship
programme become better:

Company

1. Increase number of workers

By increasing the number of work, the project can be handle efficiently and can provide
and enough rest time to the workers.
2. Conduct A Safety Procedure Course
As for a new workers, its important for the company to held a safety procedure course for
them. Its important as for them to know exactly what are they doing and they know some
safety procedure when they do the work.
3. Intern’s Walfare
For about 4 months in this company,I noticed that the interns are a bit abandoned. As for
us do the same work with the other engineer,it’s a must for us to get the same benefits as
them.We are always asked to go for outstation, but didn’t provide with outstation
allowance and also insurance. So it’s a bit helpful for use if the company can provide us
all that.

University

1. Limit the number of interns in 1 company

The outnumber of interns in a company sometime gives some a lot difficulty especially in
varieytiness of report.
11.CONCLUSION

From the first day I’m entering the Propel Network Main Office until today,I have to admit that I
have gained a lot of experience and new things to learn. Its a new experience for me to enjoy an
outside world instead of classes only as it is very different from campus life.I manage to
applicate things that I learned in the classes into this internship days.

I’m feeling very lucky to finish my internship here at Propel Network.I obtain a lot of new
knowledge throughout the day.Its my first time to get along with Drive Test with others
engineer.Besides that, I have been given chances to make decision on my own, learning how to
cooperate with members and be responsible for every single task that had been assigned.
Teamwork is very important to perform every reliability test. Besides carrier skills, I have also
improved my personality development especially communication skills. Many difficulties and
challenges my team and I have faced.

Producing technical documents like monthly report and others has helped improved and sharpen
technical writing skills. Visits and training has also enabled trainees to obtain resources and
information and also widen their knowledge. Many knowledge and experiences could be gain
throughout this training. Working in night shift especially had given me a brand new challenging
experience that I have never had. This would prepare me to a more challenging job in the future.

Finally, it has been a wonderful and knowledge enriching experience training here at Propel
Network. Much has been learned, from equipment troubleshooting, line problems, teamwork and
on to interpersonal skills. All this would certainly be of great help when it comes to obtaining a
real job after graduation.
