Assignment 6.1.
Assignment 6.1.
It's the last week of the course and now you have a prototype that reflects several
iterations. Most recently, you have concentrated on balance and usability. Now
you'll work on polish, consider next steps, and reflect on the whole process.
Polish is more is than just smoothing out rough spots; think about the following
questions:
Next, think about the future. If you chose to work on your project again, what
would you focus on? Write a few notes. Finally, reflect on your design process. In
the deliverable section, we've provided some questions to guide your thinking.
For the deliverable, you'll have two parts: content that goes "in the box" (Note:
This is a symbolic or virtual box.) and companion material. Take the time to
organize your submission so it is easy for other participants to read.
In the box:
Game concept (explained briefly in roughly 3-5 sentences) - This should reflect the
latest version of your game.
Final rules for set-up and play
At least 2 images of your prototypes - Ideally, it would be great to see your game
in more than one stage of development.
Video of game play (OPTIONAL)
An image of what the box for your game would look like (OPTIONAL) - This should be
original work created by you.
Companion material:
What changes did you make during the polishing phase? Why did you make these
changes? Explain it to us.
Briefly tell us the story of your game's development. Highlight important
stages/iterations and also tell us about your experiences testing. How did your
testing experiences help you make your game better? Was there one moment when many
things seem to fall into place?
If you continue working on your project, what would you like to do to improve your
game? Let us know about work you might like to do in the future.
Reflect on your process designing a game. What aspects of the process were very
challenging? What parts did you find easy? Was there one phase of development that
was particularly enjoyable? What about next steps? Which videos, readings,
assignments, and/or activities were especially helpful to you as a designer? Share
your thoughts.
Guidance for Peer Feedback:
Respond to at least two participants in the 11.126x forums who posted just before
you (their posts will be just below yours). If those participants have already
received feedback, look for participants who have not received any. Don't forget
the Peer Review Feedback guidelines and do the following:
Play the participant's game as if you were just a typical player (meaning not a
11.126x participant studying game design). What feature do you like best? What
feature do you think needs improvement?
Think about the game (as a whole) critically and provide some suggestions for
improvement.
Comment on the participant's game development story and design process. Do you have
any suggestions for streamlining their process or things to try for next time?
Did the participant's game, or their experiences, inspire you to think about your
game in a different way?
