PETROLEUM PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Technique or technology to produced fluid from

reservoir to surface
General concept:
Flow rate that produced maximum petroleum
production for certain production system and
conditions  q optimum
Schematic Petroleum Production System
BACKGROUND

 Tubing head pressure :

 to overcome choke & surface facilities pressure drop
 Equilibrium must exist between reservoir & tubing performance
 Flowing wellbore pressure :
 to overcome tubing string pressure drop

WHY?
– Reservoir performance – which delivers more fluid for lower Pwf
– Inflow performance relationship (IPR) – requires reservoir data gathering
– Tubing performance – which delivers more fluid for higher Pwf
– Tubing performance curve (TPC), or vertical lift performance (VLP) – can be predicted

This equilibrium is ensured by the correct selection of tubing size, depending upon:
1. Required tubing head pressure
2. Fluid type (GOR,BS&W)
Surface pressure drop (choke & surface facilities), will vary over the field producing
lifetime.
PRODUCTION ENGINEER

• Primary function:
– To evaluate & predict well performance
– To predict whether well required artificial lift / not (when ?)
• Question need answer:
– What is the well producing now ?
– What will the well produce if the production condition changed ?
– - need for periodic well tests:
– To monitor well performance
– To monitor reservoir performance
PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Can be divided into 3 stages:
1. Fluid flow from reservoir to bottomhole
• Through porous media : Darcy law (across the reservoir)
• Across the completion (perforation/gravel pack, etc)
• Well performance evaluation (IPR)
2. Fluid flow from bottomhole to surface
• Through vertical tubing / annulus (across tubing & any restrictions)
• Across the subsurface safety valve
• Well performance evaluation (VLP/TP)
3. Fluid flow from wellhead to separator etc
– Through horizontal pipe @ flow line (across flowline)
– Across the surface choke
– Well performance evaluation (CP)
Basic requirements:
• Fluid mechanic
• Reservoir rock properties
• Reservoir engineering

---- pressure losses or distribution

Pressure Losses @ Production System

• Can be grouped into 3 main components:

– Total pressure losses in the reservoir &
completion
– Total pressure losses in the tubing
– Total pressure losses at the surface
