AVR USB Programmer

The AVR USB JTAG is a development tool that can program, emulate, and debug AVR microcontrollers with a JTAG interface. It has a 10-pin JTAG connector and USB connector, and can be used to program all AVR microcontrollers without an external power supply. It provides standard 2x10 pin JTAG interface and can debug and program AVR microcontrollers. LED indicators show the power and configuration status, and a switch can optionally power a connected target board from the USB connection.

Overview of the device

Points to notice:
LED’s functions :-
 Power Led (D3) is used to indicate power to the programmer board.

 Initially the power LED glows continuously along with the blinking –D and +D Led’s. Later the
–D LED settles down to glow & +D turns off. At the same time configuration LED (D2) starts
glowing continuously.
 Configure Led (D2) is used to indicate successful configuration of the USB programmer board.

Switch functions :-
 Switch can be used to power the target AVR board. When placed on Power Target, the program-
mer will power the target AVR board, otherwise not.
 It should be noted that, there is no regulated power supply on the programmer board, thus it pro-
vides direct power from the USB. One should not use this supply if there are any electronic com-
ponents on the target board that have a operation voltage less than the USB supply voltage(4.5 V),
otherwise the components may get damaged.

How to use ?
After successfully connecting the USB, one will find Power Led (D3), –D LED and configura-
tion LED (D2) continue to glow. Otherwise the connection is not proper, and it is advised to recon-
firm the connection cables and connection setup. Shown below is the image of the response after the
programmer connection is successfully established.

How to use ? (contd...)

Target Power can be used to power the target AVR Board. With the help of a Flat Ribbon Ca-
ble one can connect the programmer to the target AVR board. The setup is now ready for program-
ming the AVR.

Shown below is the image of the response after the programmer is successfully connected with the
main AVR board.

(*Note: the response should be similar when the following command line is issued —>
― avrdude –c usbtiny –p m16 ―
