4.3.3 Practice
4.3.3 Practice
On your assignment sheet, answer the questions about creating and delivering slide
presentations.
1. In terms of delivering a presentation, explain how a slide presentation differs from a lecture?
(1 point)
A lecture is an oral presentation by a lecturer that talks about a particular topic or subject,
lectures are mostly in academic context on the other hand, slides show the audience something
that you researched about these are mostly given in a business context and include graphs and
other types of media.
2. Describe a common error that presenters make during their presentation and how to remedy
the error.
Lack of preparation, a way to fix this is to practice presenting your presentation beforehand
This means to have less words on a presentation, and instead verbally communicate that
information, that way the audience wont have too much to read and they are more engaged
because they are hearing your presentation instead of reading it.
4. Part of delivering an effective slide presentation is making sure you present your material in a
logical order. Before you begin to create your slides, what is one way to make sure your material
is in a logical order on your slides?
Its important to listen to your audience because they might have questions or want to suggest
something to you.
1. Think carefully about what happened to Amber's presentation. In your estimation, what was
her first mistake?
I think her first mistake was not checking if her room had a projector.
2. The image below could be considered to be a typical conference room. Imagine that you have
to present to your corporate team in this room. What are a few things you would have to
consider when presenting in this room?
3. Now, imagine you are giving a presentation in the room shown below. What are the main
differences here as opposed to the previous room?
4. Let's continue with Amber. Once she began, she realized that she was short on time so she
simply skipped her opening slides. Feeling a bit frazzled, Amber began reading from slide 7.
Why do you think that this would not be Amber's best strategy?
Because she is just jumping in to the main point instead of introducing it throughout the first
couple of slides.
5. What we didn't mention was that after Amber's 7th slide, her 8th slide contained a few
questions for the group. Amber then asked her audience to comment on a few questions that
she had up on the screen. Amber was usually very good at getting the audience to converse with
her, but today it was difficult. What was wrong with her strategy of audience engagement?
Amber should have asked the questions herself to help engage the audience.
1. Delivering a successful presentation is difficult, and often it comes down to the details.
Watch Video A, which is on the second page of this activity. List three things you think this
presenter is doing successfully.
They are discussing with everyone and everyone is participating in the discussion
2. Watch Video B. Compare the two presenters and identify two things this presenter could do
better.
The audience is distracted and using their computers and not listening to the presenter.
3. Not everyone is a natural public speaker. Even the best speakers will have to create note
cards to remind themselves of information. For this assignment, create a note card that you will
have on the podium next to you. On this note card list four things you need to remember during
your presentation. For example, if you are a fast talker, one thing on your note card will be "Slow
down."
Slow down, don't stare at notes, engage with the listeners, take longer pauses
Take a moment and think about your public speaking skills, as well as what makes a good
communicator, and write down four things that you think would help you the most.
Listen to the audience, use strong word choice, engage with the audience, speak slowly and
clear.
4. Engaging your audience in meaningful activities can be the most difficult part of a
presentation. It can also, however, be the most rewarding. When you are planning for
interactivity with your audience, two factors should be taken into account, the size of the
audience and the presentation space. We have already looked at a smart room in question 3 of
the analyze portion of this exercise. Now, for this question, imagine that you are giving a
presentation on your company's customer relations philosophy in this room. Describe an
exercise that would be appropriate for this setting and context.
You could use the projector to present a slide show on customer relations philosophy.
