What is peace? People often say that peace is opposite of war. However, there are many other ways to
define peace. Some people say that peace means more than ‘no war’. Every year many people die in wars, but more
people are killed in many other ways.
Each year millions of children and poor people die because they do not have enough food. These hungry
people cannot afford to buy food they need. These people are not fighting in a war but they do not have peace in
their life either. Therefore, peace can also be the opposite of hunger.
Another cause of death for millions of people every year is disease. Many mortal diseases can be prevented
by clean water or cured by medicine. Few people die of dysentery in developed countries, but many people in poor
countries die of it and many other preventable diseases. So peace can also be the opposite of preventable diseases.
There are many wars between countries. However, people are also killed by people from their own country.
Whenever there are political or religious conflicts, which often results in riots, some people get killed. Therefore,
peace can be the opposite of lacking freedom in religious beliefs.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA in 1929. At that time in America, black
people didn't have equal rights with white people. Black people had to sit in the back of busses. The schools were
segregated and there were even separate public restrooms for black people and white people. Black people's lives
were not very good.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister in a Church. He fought against racial segregation. He wanted equal
rights for all people. But he didn't use violence in his fight. He asked people to fight peacefully. For example, he
asked black people to ride in the front of the bus. More than 200,000 people went to Washington D.C. to listen to
him speak and ask the government to change unfair laws.
Because of Martin Luther King, Jr., many laws began to change in the United States. But many white people
disagreed with him and his ways. In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated by a white man.

September 21st is known around the globe as International Peace Day. It presents educators with an
opportunity to teach their students about history, the importance of peace and the costs of war. In this holiday,
the world leaders ask their soldiers to cease fire for one day. Many major cities ring a peace bell and citizens
wear a white dove to symbolize peace.
Indeed, all the nations want peace and aspire to live in it. However, only irresponsible politicians would

Malcolm X has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.
Malcolm was an African American Muslim minister and human rights activist. He was a courageous advocate
for the rights of African Americans, a man who indicted white Americans for their crimes against black
Americans.
Malcolm X had a very harsh childhood. His father died when he was young. It was rumored that he
was killed by whites. When he was thirteen, his mother was placed in a mental hospital, and he was placed in
a series of foster homes. In 1946, he was caught involved in a robbery. Malcolm was sentenced to ten years in
prison.
While in prison, Malcolm X had undergone radical changes in his personality. He became a member of
the “Nation of Islam ”and quickly he rose to become its leader and public face for a dozen of years. However,
the teachings of the Nation of Islam had nothing to do with our religion. It taught black supremacy and
advocated separation of black and white Americans.
After visiting Mecca, Malcolm had the chance to recognize the true Islam . He said that it
had opened his eyes, as he saw all colours following the teachings of the Koran – that it wasn’t
violent, but accepting the true equality between all people and races. This was something the Nation
of Islam hadn’t followed.
In February 1965, less than a year after leaving the Nation of Islam, he was assassinated by three
members of the group for turning against them.

Conflicts are a normal part of life, finding a solution in which both sides can benefit is cornerstone of
conflict resolution, an important tool for bringing peace into our lives, our communities and our world.
Today conflict resolution is being practised in schools, teachers receive training to become
“peacemakers” when conflicts arise in the classroom.Organizations are being called on to help families,
communities, and even nations to work out their problems.
Take for example, the United Nations whose mission is to help create a more peaceful, just and
sustainable world. UN Peacekeepers help countries torn apart by conflict create conditions for peace. UN
Peacekeepers are soldiers, police and civilian personnel from many countries. They help conflicting sides to
carry out peace agreements they’ve agreed upon. In its over 60 years history, UN Peacekeepers have been
involved in 172 peaceful settlements.
In 1988, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces. May 29 was
designed by the United Nations as the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
Peace is more than the absence of war. It is a state of being in balance and harmony. Peace is about

OSLO: The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2008 Peace Prize on Friday to Martti
AHTISAARI, the former Finnish president who has been associated over decades with peace efforts and quiet,
cautious diplomacy from Asia to Africa and Europe. Out of 197 people nominated for the annual prize, the
committee said, Ahtisaari had been chosen "for his important efforts in several continents and over three
decades to resolve international conflicts."
He has played a central role in ending conflicts that took root in the late 20th century and threatened the
early 21st century with conflagrations in many places. Specifically, the committee mentioned his work in
ending South African domination of Namibia, the former South-West Africa, from the 1970s to the late 1990s ,
and peace efforts in the Indonesian province of Aceh, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Central Asia, the Horn of
Africa and, most recently, in Iraq.
In an initial response, Ahtisaari said he was "very pleased and grateful" at receiving the prize, which is
worth $1.4 million. It will be awarded to him at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10.
In a television interview after the award was announced, Ahtisaari indicated that he might slow the pace
of his travels, which, he said, had kept him away from Finland for 200 days a year. "I want to spend more time
with my wife," he said.
