Warm-up: (5mins) : To activate background knowledge, schema, and motivate students,

as warm up, the teacher shows a famous painting by Van Gogh and asks some questions
about it: What does this picture tell us? Do you know the artist who painted it?
Who is your favorite artist, and which painting of him/her do you like?
Have you ever heard of Vincent van Gogh?
What do you know about him?
To teach key words (portray, technique, mood, brushstroke, express), the teacher
presents them through visuals, emphasizing their pronunciation and how they are used in
a context. Later, the teacher asks the class to repeat these words. They are expected to use
these words in the production activity.
Pre-speaking: (10mins) After warm up activity, the teacher opens a video about the artist
Vincent van Gogh. By watching video, the students will be able to gain information about
him and his paintings and his technique. While watching the video, students will do a
worksheet which includes True/False questions. Students then will give the answers and
teacher will note them on the board.

Practice/Speaking: Stage-1 -Group Discussion (10mins) The class will be divided into
5 groups and each sample of the paintings will be distributed to the groups. The students
will brainstorm about images as a group activity. The teacher wants the students to
discuss about paintings and present their findings. During peer discussion, they will ask
questions to one another and share their point of view.
”What can be the name of the painting?”
“What is the purpose of the artist?”
“Why did he choose these colors or this objects?”

Production/ Speaking-Stage-2- Class Presentation: (15mins) Each group will present

their paintings and speculate about them for 3-5 minutes by looking at their notes. The
class need to be attentive by taking notes on how similar or different their opinions are,
and asking questions to their friends.

Conclusion: (5mins) The teacher will ask some questions to conclude the activity.
“What did you feel when you heard your peer’s opinions about the paintings?”
“What do you think about Vincent van Gogh, is he pessimist or optimist?”

Assessment: The teacher does informal observation during the group and presentation
activity. During the production stage, the teacher takes note on students’ pronunciation,
fluency and grammar by using a rubric. The teacher will not interfere with students unless
there is a conversation breakdown. Students will also do a self-evaluation considering
their fluency, pronunciation, and accuracy. They will also reflect on how they felt while
they were speaking.

Contingency plan: If the class has more time, they may compare and contrast the
paintings. Teacher can ask, “If you had a chance to talk to him in person, what would you
tell him?”. Students can give their answers and make a discussion on it. Also, they may
write a letter to Vincent Van Gogh.
