The Good Son

The psychological thriller, The Good Son, deals with a side to humanity that few barely accept
and understand that not all children are sweet little innocents, pure as the driven snow. It challenges the
romantic perception of childhood as an idyllic and innocent phase of life; thus, this movie showcases
various positive and negative freedom which made me realize that into what extent freedom can be
abused.

Based on the module that I have learned, I analyzed the difference between positive and
negative freedom, in which positive freedom gives you the freedom to make choices, the actual capacity
to do things and that to realize your goals. Whereas, negative freedom gives you the freedom from
being interfered by anyone. Basically, no one can force you to do or don’t do certain things.

Upon watching the movie, the first positive freedom was shown when Henry helped Mark who
was about to fall off the treehouse. It is clear that Henry’s goal in this scene was to save Mark from
totally falling by pulling him up towards a safer place in the treehouse.

Next scenario was when Mark pushed Henry to the side of the cliff. It goes to show that
preventing Henry from throwing a massive rock towards her mother was his goal. This is a clear
indication of a positive freedom because Mark’s act of concern.

The last positive freedom specified in the movie was when Susan, the mother, was making a
choice on whether whom she would save from the life-death situation of both his son and nephew.
Amidst the brawl, Susan successfully climbed back to the cliff ground. Henry and Mark rolled off the
edge of the cliff, while Susan grabbed hold of them. Both boys desperately plead for her to save them
that made Susan feel an excruciating pain. In the end, Susan chose to save Mark instead of his own son,
considering the devastating and threatening acts that Henry did.

On the other hand, one of the negative freedoms I observed while watching the movie was
when Henry killed the dog using his invention that fires steel bolts. He was so sure that he wanted to
target the dog, which made Mark traumatized. This moment emphasizes the fact that Henry
understands the difference between right and wrong, but simply does not care to do what’s right.

Moreover, a negative freedom was once again executed when Henry dropped off a human form
off a bridge, which eventually caused a highway crash. This is a proof of how freedom can be really
abused, to the point where it causes harm to others.

Lastly, Henry purposely threw Connie toward the thin ice while ice skating. It was nobody else’s
decision but his. It proves how megalomaniac and a psychopath he is that he even tried to kill his own
sister.

These scenarios have proven that Henry went over the line with his freedom in decision making,
which made it clearly curtailed since it caused so much harm to the people involved, and because he did
not act according to his conscience.

Hence, the right to have freedom plays a vital role in making decisions in life, for it enables us to
make choices for our own actions. However, in order for it to be morally good, we must act according to
our conscience, because its main objective is to refrain from doing bad actions that might harm other
people. Having freedom take charge in making such actions while using our conscience, makes us
evaluate what we do in a more serious and careful way.
