Compositions Grading Rubric and Checklist
Organization
Follows a logical progression with similar topics being grouped together 5
Each paragraph or section of the letter has a topic sentence. 4 3 Details in the paragraphs and sections relate to the topic sentence. 2 Transitional sentences and connector words are used between paragraphs and sections. 1 Connector words are used to link ideas together within sentences. A variety of connector words are used that go beyond y, pero and también. Sentence structure and grammatical accuracy ¨ Accuracy Errors, when present, generally do not interfere with comprehensibility. Articles and other determiners are used or omitted as required. 5 Pronouns are used and inflected correctly. 4 Verb tenses, moods and aspects are generally accurate. 3 2 Prepositions are used correctly. 1 The redacción does not “read like English with Spanish words”. Spanish syntax is used. Word order is generally accurate. The redacción contains few run-on sentences or sentence fragments. o Strategies are employed to reduce wordiness such as: - using pronouns to combine information that refers to the same nouns - replacing muy + adjective with the superlative form –ísimo - replacing prepositional phrases with single words that achieve the same purpose - using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, prepositions and relative pronouns to combine related ideas into a single sentence o Sentence structure is varied with the use of simple, compound and complex sentences. Vocabulary and accuracy There are few vocabulary errors, mistranslations, false cognates, or inappropriate translations. Vocabulary errors rarely interfere with comprehensibility. 5 Vocabulary is at an appropriate register and level of sophistication. 4 Variety 3 The author makes use of synonyms and paraphrase. 2 The author does not over rely on high frequency words and cognates. 1 Conciseness Weak verbs such as ser/estar/tener/hay/gustar/ir/ayudar/poder/necesitar, are used infrequently and are replaced with strong verbs denoting action. General nouns such as cosa/persona/gente/sociedad/problema/vida/mundo, etc. are replaced with more specific terms. Quantitative adjectives and adverbs such as mucho/muy/pequeño/grande/poco, etc. are replaced with specific quantities or dimensions. Subjective adjectives and adverbs such as bien, buen(o), gran, importante, interesante, necesario, serio, mal(o), fácil, difícil, etc. are replaced with more specific adjectives.
