INTRODUCTION
2009 was a fantastic vintage throughout France and the Rhône valley was no exception. It is
without doubt a very attractive vintage producing wines of stunning depth, luxurious texture
and fine balance. The wines will bring immediate pleasure to those not willing to wait but
will also age gracefully. Most importantly the quality is well spread across the range offering
great value for money.

RHÔNE 2009 VINTAGE REPORT

Since 1998 the Rhône Valley has been blessed with a succession of highly rated vintages.
Even in this context however the 2009 vintage is an exceptional year. A wet and cold winter
followed by an equally wet spring ensured that the soils maintained the sufficient levels of
water needed for the dry summer months that followed. Flowering took place at the end of
May/beginning of June and was even, promising good yields. Summer was very dry indeed
with very low rainfall. Vines were put under considerable stress, particularly in the South
but they were saved by a very welcome short rainfall in mid-September. The Mistral, which
blew in at the same time, helped to concentrate the grapes. The warm and stable weather
from August through to October gave the growers the rare opportunity to choose when to
pick their grapes. The best domaines managed to pick early and their wines reveal a great
balance between the opulent ripe fruit, freshness and the ripe yet prominent structure.
Most of the 2009s will be drinking very early but will be capable of medium to long term
ageing due to the high levels of friendly, mature tannins.

Northern Rhône
2009 is one of the most pleasurable vintages to taste young in recent Northern Rhône
history. Even the most serious cuvées are already showing their charm and a great sense of
harmony. Tannins are soft and well integrated, the fruit is opulent and ripe and yet the
wines still maintain their freshness and elegance. There is a wonderful sense of terroir
across the Northern Rhône wines. Even adjacent vineyards are displaying great differences
thanks to perfect growing conditions and little intervention from the growers.

The star performers in 2009 have to be Côte Rôtie and Hermitage. But this is also a perfect
vintage to stock up on good value wines. Our team was amazed by the level of purity and
concentration of fruit along with the fine nature of the tannins present, even at the basic
level. Most of the wines will drink very early but the intensity of fruit and good structure will
ensure that they keep very well in the cellar for years to come.

“I can say that without a doubt it is the finest overall vintage in the north since 1999, and probably
since 1990.” (Robert Parker, Oct 2010)

Southern Rhône
2009 for the Southern Rhône is an excellent, early drinking vintage showing benchmark
power and elegance. Many of our Southern Rhône producers said it was comparable to a
cross between 2000 and 2005. The wines have opulent, ripe fruit, like the 2000s, but this is
married with the freshness and excellent structure found in the 2005s. The difference we
found was that the 2009 tannins are much finer and riper than in 2005. As a result, the
wines can be drunk early but also have great ageing potential.

The yields in the South were severely affected by the very dry summer and most of our
producers have reported a 30% reduction in yield. Cool nights however ensured good levels
of acidity to balance out the superb density and concentration of fruit. There is also great
value to be found in the domaines’ basic cuvées in 2009, from Châteauneuf-du-Pape right
down to Côtes du Rhône level. We particularly liked the wines from the higher altitude,
chalky soils of Gigondas, which showed an extra level of vibrant energy in fruit and superb
freshness and minerality.

“…one could argue that 2009 may end up to be nearly as profound as 2007.” (Robert parker, Oct
2010)

NORTHERN RHÔNE

FRANÇOIS VILLARD
The energetic François Villard started out as a
chef before turning his hand to winemaking.
Given the success of his wines, the restaurant
industry’s loss has been the wine industry’s gain.
He harvests his wines late, but still manages to
retain a thrilling minerality in the finished
product, as well as a clear difference in style
between vineyards.

“The waves that his intense, dense wines have

created have put his wines at the top of many
Rhône lovers’ shopping lists.” Andrew Jefford, The
New France

Vin de Pays Syrah Seul en Scène 2009 £230 2013
Seul en Scène is made in a very limited quantity from 100% Syrah grapes, grown at an historic site near the
village of Seysuel. This location, just across the river from Côte Rôtie, was first found attractive by the Romans
who cultivated grapes here. This is only the second vintage made and the result is a wine of superb
concentration and high density with white pepper, grilled bacon and earthy mineral notes. There is a
considerable but friendly structure that is well balanced by great freshness and vibrant fruit. (JR: 16)

Côte Rôtie Le Gallet Blanc 2009 £310 2012

A superbly perfumed, developed nose with violets, leather and grilled meat notes. Almost Burgundian in style,
this wine has a fine texture with lashings of blackcurrant and mulberry fruit. This is supported by a mineral
backbone of fine, soft tannins. The long, pure finish is harmonious and with great focus. (JR: 17)

Côte Rôtie La Brocarde 2009 £565 2013

A complex, elegant nose of dark forest fruit, vanilla and earthy notes. An effortless wine with layers and

DOMAINE PIERRE GAILLARD

Pierre Gaillard is one of the most highly

esteemed vignerons in the Northern Rhône.
Having previously worked for both Vidal-
Fleury and Etienne Guigal, he decided to set
up on his own in the mid-1980s. His wines
were instantly a hit. From his small village of
Malleval, Pierre tends to his vineyards of St.
Joseph, Condrieu and Côte Rôtie. His wines
are pure and terroir-driven with vibrant,
opulent fruit. His 2009s have a beautiful
ripeness with impressive concentration.

* Star Buy: St Joseph 2009

£/case In Bond Drinking From

Condrieu 2009 £245 2011

Honeysuckle on the nose with white peach fruit and spring blossom notes, leading onto a full-bodied,
smoothly textured palate. There is fine yet ripe fruit, which is well balanced by the acidity and the mineral
complexity on the long finish. Very classic, pure and clean. (JR: 16)

Condrieu Cuvée Jeanne-Elise Viognier 2009 (Vin de Paille) £235 (12x37.5cl) 2011

The palate is rich and full with peaches, white flowers and jasmine. Delicious and not to be missed.

Condrieu Fleurs d’Automne 2009 (Vendanges Tardive) £305 (12x50cl) 2011

Mid gold in colour, this wine is beautifully rich and sweet. Honeysuckle, orange blossom and golden syrup
combine to give a wonderful array of aromas. The palate is full and the finish long, with a wonderful peach
and floral finish. (JR: 16)

*St Joseph 2009 £125 2011

An inviting nose of sweet scented spice and flowers. A delicious palate bursting with fully ripe, fresh fruit,
spicy pepper notes and a very soft fine structure. Very approachable and satisfying. (JR: 17)

St Joseph Clos de Cuminaille 2009 £160 2012

The 4-hectare Clos de Cuminaille, situated at Chavanay, was the first that Pierre established back in 1981.
This wine spends 20 months in oak, of which 50% is new. The nose reveals darker fruit, wet forest floor and
some meaty, smoky notes. This leads onto a medium-bodied palate exhibiting a chocolaty texture, coffee and
barbecued meat flavours mixed in with dark berry fruit. There is great structure to this wine and yet it is fine,
promising early drinking as well as good ageing potential. (JR: 16.5)

St Joseph Les Pierres 2009 £245 2013
This is a selection of the best grapes from three vineyards, vinified separately and aged in new oak. Only the
best of the barrels are chosen after maturation and blended into Les Pierres. A very spicy nose, which is
bursting with white pepper, floral notes as well as roasted meat, black olive tapenade and herb aromas.
Great concentration of opulent, juicy fruit on the palate is complemented by intense minerality and seamless
structure. (JR: 16)

Cornas 2009 £245 2011

A delightful, approachable Cornas full of intense, flashy fruit coated in sweet spices. Seductive and pure, this
wine finishes with multi-dimensional fruit, a hint of creamy chocolate and rich mocha notes.

Vin de Pays “Asiaticus” 2009 £240 2013

The grapes for this cuvée come from the same historic site near the village of Seysuel where Villard grows
grapes for his Seul en Scène cuvée. The wine is named after the Roman administrator Asiaticus, who lived in
this area when Roman winemaking was at its peak. The 2009 Asiaticus is a rich, powerful wine with an
expressive nose bursting with dark berries, liquorice, fried bacon and peppery notes. There is considerable
structure supporting the density and concentration of fruit. Very long and rich.

Côte Rôtie 2009 £295 2012

This is a blend of two vineyards. La Brosse from the Côte Brune provides rich, open-nit fruit, depth and
developed tannins while the Côte Blonde’s Viallières gives aromatic definition, elegance and a higher grained
structure. Made from 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier, this 2009 Côte-Rôtie is a polished, complex wine
combining great depth of intense aromatics with a velvety structure and elegance. (JR: 17)

Côte Rôtie La Rose Pourpre 2009 £595 2013

Made entirely from Syrah grapes and aged in 100% new oak, the Rose Pourpre has an expressive nose with
pronounced meaty notes, tar, black olives and luxurious fruit. The palate is dense and firm, with
a full body, exceptional depth and muscle. The fifty second finish is rich, focused and complex, beaming with
freshness and minerality. (JR: 16.5)

DOMAINE DU COLOMBIER

Florent Viale took over the winemaking at Domaine du

Colombier in 1991 and since then the quality of the wines has
improved tremendously. Florent is a master at making Syrah and
his wines are pure, clean and full of character. He makes two
Crozes Hermitages with the cuvée prestige Gaby (named after
Florent's father) being the more concentrated and age worthy
one. He also produces a red Hermitage and a miniscule quantity
of white.

elegant, full-bodied wines with rich red fruit
flavours, velvety texture and fine tannins.
They are always in high demand.

DOMAINE SANTA DUC

Yves Gras is an energetic but very patient man, with a

great passion for getting the best possible results from
his vines and his grapes. He is very respectful towards
nature, caring for his vines and maintaining biodiversity
in his vineyards. The result is rich, powerful wines
with complex aromas and flavours and fine tannins.
The 2009s reveal great structure to match the
wonderful ripeness and fine fruit. His wines also have
elegance and finesse.

“Yves Gras’ 22-ha domaine has been one of the AOC leaders in Gigondas for a decade or more
now, and the cuvées seem to acquire new chocolaty, earthy depth and intensity with every year that

*Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues 2009 £240 2014

on the palate are kept in check with a wonderful chalky minerality and firm structure. A good level of acid

DOMAINE GRAND VENEUR

The Jaume family have been making wine here since

1826 and still own the same vineyards, with some
90-year old vines still in production. Christophe
Jaume, the sixth generation of his family to grow
vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is justifiably proud of
his spectacularly successful wines from the 2009
vintage. Their basic red Châteauneuf-du-Pape must
be the best value wine in this offer.

“This estate, owned by the Jaume family, has been on fire over the last decade.” Robert Parker, The
Wine Advocate

Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Fontaine 2009 £280 2011

Made from 100% Roussanne and aged in 50% new oak, La Fontaine is an open and seductive
wine offering aromatic fruit, floral notes and honey. The palate is voluptuous with mouth coating
ripe fruit, mineral texture and a pure, satisfying finish. Pure joy.

*Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2009 £175 2011

A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre and matured in 30% new oak. An intense and
complex nose with blueberries and blackberry fruit, coated in vanilla oak. A soft and complex palate, which is
rich with great depth and intensity offering layers of concentrated kirsch and cherry fruit. Very long and
concentrated for a basic cuvée. (RP: 91-93)

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Les Origines 2009 £250 2012

Less than 350 cases are made of this wine, which is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20%
Syrah and is matured in 55% new oak. The grapes come from clay soils that retain water well during the hot
summer months. There is even more maturation and ripeness here than in 2007. The palate is opulent with
immense concentration and brooding fruit. There are high tannins but these are exceptionally ripe and have
a fine texture. The finish is long and complex with beautiful fruit and mineral notes. (RP: 92-95, JR: 17)

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2009 £225 per 6 2014

This wine is made from grapes coming from the oldest plots at the domaine (around 100 years old) that
have been in the family since 1826. This wine is a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah
and is aged in 100% new oak. The oak is well integrated as it has been well absorbed by the blackberry,
kirsch and sour cherry fruit and pronounced structure. There are complex flavours of pencil shavings, black
olives, provençal herbs and truffles followed by a never ending finish that finally reveals a hint of toasty oak.
This wine is more backward than Les Origines, with fairly high, finely grained tannins. However, this will all
soften and harmonise with time, allowing its impressively concentrated fruit to assert its dominance.

DOMAINE DE CRISTIA
Established in 1942 by Etienne Grangeon with
an initial 2 hectares of Grenache, Domaine de
Cristia has rapidly established itself as one of
the top estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The
top cuvées are becoming highly sought-after
by drinkers and investors. Bastide, Dominique
and Florent now join their father and
continue to make high quality wines. The
2009s are typical of the style of the domaine:
soft and delicate wines which are
approachable in their youth although the top
cuvées will last for many years to come.

“As I have indicated over the last few years, this is one of the superb newer producers in
Châteauneuf-du-Pape." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2009 £185 2011

Organic, well defined fruit is the benchmark of this property and this cuvée has plenty of it. Made from
100% Grenache, this wine bursts with fresh and dried black cherry fruit. The soft, open palate has no hard
edges and reveals immediate charm. This is one of the most approachable Châteauneuf-du-Papes we tasted
in 2009 and is ready to drink. (RP: 90-92, JR: 17)

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Renaissance 2009 £185 per 6 2014

60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre with 50% new oak. This wine has a bouquet that is very complex with
fresh and dried fruit complimented by developed notes of leather, wet leaves, cigar box and garrigues. On the
palate it is precise and focused with firm tannins and minerals, keeping lively multi-layered fruit in check.
There is vibrant blueberry and kirsch fruit, which is finely enriched with earthy notes and minerality. This is
slightly more backward than the Vieilles Vignes cuvée since chalky tannins still have a firm grip on the fruit
and secondary flavours. (RP: 90-93, JR: 16)

*Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2009 £210 per 6 2012

Made from 80 year old Grenache vines and aged in small old barrels, this is slightly more reserved on the
nose offering dark, complex aromas of forest floor and grilled meat, interlaced with ripe black fruit. An
explosive, multi-layered full-bodied palate that has considerably ripe tannins and a fine underlying minerality.
A lingering one minute finish is fresh and effortlessly balances out the very dense fruit. (RP: 92-94, JR: 17)

LA FERME DU MONT

Stéphane Vedeau is a dedicated and conscientious

young proprietor. He established La Ferme du Mont in
Courthézon, in the southern Rhône, because of the
unique terroir that he found there. The soil at La Ferme
du Mont has a high mineral content with a noticeably
low PH and the vineyards have an excellent exposure to
the southern sun. As a result the wines produced have
an immense concentration and are incredibly well
balanced. Stéphane appears intent on making a top-flight reputation for himself. Robert
Parker seems to think he already has, regularly giving him over 90 points for his wines, as he
has done for this 2009.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Côtes Capelan 2009 £285 2012

Dark opaque fruit infused with vanilla oak and garrigue notes dominate the wonderfully aromatic nose. The
palate is profound and dense, with layer upon layer of fresh forest fruits, griottes and cherry preserve. Full-
bodied and powerful, this wine is still airy and effortless, carried by copious quantities of minerals and
freshness. This must be one of the stars of 2009 vintage. (RP: 93-95, JR: 16.5)
