Symmetry: Martinez, Lara M

This document discusses different types of symmetry patterns - rosette, frieze, and wallpaper patterns. It defines each pattern type, describes their distinguishing symmetry properties like rotations, reflections, translations, and provides examples of each. Rosette patterns have reflection and rotation symmetries forming a center point. Frieze patterns extend in one direction with translations. Wallpaper patterns have symmetries in two independent directions with possible 180, 120, 90, or 60 degree rotations.

SYMMETRY

MARTINEZ, LARA M.
Let's see if we' really know our
way with symmetry!
CHALLENGE! Observe the following pictures
and identify if it is symmetrical or
asymmetrical.

TRANSFORMATION

Review
It is the change in size or position of a figure
(throughout the lesson, we'll refer to the
element or figure as "motif")

4 TYPES OF TRANSFORMATION
1.ROTATION

Turns figure at a certain point (ex. 90 degree rotation)

2. TRANSLATION

Slides figure in a certain direction (ex. horizontally)

TRANSFORMATION

It is the change in size or position of a figure
(throughout the lesson, we'll refer to the
element or figure as "motif")

4 TYPES OF TRANSFORMATION
3. REFLECTION

Mirrors a motif over a line

4. DILATION

Shrinks or expands a motif by some scaling factor

Symmetry

Symmetry is the balanced and proportionate similarity when our motif is

halved.
We can determine a motif's symmetry by drawing an imaginary line in the
middle of the figure. This is called the line of symmetry.

In symmetry, an object or motif is translated, then reflected.

3 broad types of Symmetry

ROSETTE PATTERNS FRIEZE PATTERNS WALLPAPER PATTERNS

This pattern exhibits This pattern exhibits This pattern exhibits
reflection and reflection, rotation reflection, rotation and
rotation Has translation and glide reflections
No translation / glide glide reflection but Also has translations in 2
reflection only along one line linearly independent
directions
This pattern exhibits reflection and rotation
No translation / glide reflection

It has 2 types:

Rosette 1. Cyclic - has rotational symmetry

2. Dihedral - has rotational symmetry and

Pattern reflectional symmetry

Rotation and dihedral groups are

sometimes referred to as rosette groups
Note that all symmetry operations within
this pattern forms a center point

FINDING REFLECTIONS
IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. Cyclic - has rotational symmetry

reflectional symmetry
IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. Cyclic - has rotational symmetry

EXAMPLES 2. Dihedral - has rotational symmetry and

reflectional symmetry
This pattern exhibits reflection, rotation
Has translation and glide reflection but only
along one line

Frieze Symmetry without a center point would yield

Pattern
translation symmetries

A group with translation symmetry in one

direction is called a frieze group
IMPORTANT NOTES:

EXAMPLE
This pattern exhibits reflection, rotation
Has translation and glide reflection but only
along one line
7 possible frieze group patterns

HOP
Only involves translation
7 possible frieze group patterns

STEP
Combination of translation and reflection
It is also known as glide reflection symmetry
7 possible frieze group patterns

SIDLE
Consists of translation and vertical reflection symmetries
7 possible frieze group patterns

SPINNING HOP
Contains translation and rotation at 180 degrees
7 possible frieze group patterns

SPINNING SIDLE
Contains translation, glide reflection and rotation at 180 degrees
7 possible frieze group patterns

JUMP
Contains translation and horizontal reflection
7 possible frieze group patterns

SPINNING JUMP
Contains all symmetries (translation, horizontal and vertical reflection and
rotation)
This pattern exhibits reflection, rotation and
glide reflections
Also has translations in 2 linearly independent
directions

Wallpaper If a wallpaper group has any rotational

Pattern symmetries, then the smallest rotational

symmetry must be one of 180, 120, 90, or 60
degrees.
A wallpaper group can also have reflection
symmetries and glide reflection symmetries.

independent directions
