DMCF 2232 – HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC SYSTEM

(SIMULATION)

1.0 OBJECTIVE

This exercise is divided into 6 exercises. At the end of the exercise, trainee should be
able to design and operate suitable electric control circuit based on JIC standard (Joint
Industrial Conference) over 6 circuits mentioned in the problem statements.

Exercise 1 The application of direct and indirect control.

Exercise 2 The application of latching circuit.
Exercise 3 The concept of reset push button and limit switch.
Exercise 4 The application of double solenoid valve as memory circuit.
Exercise 5 The application of timer to delay starting operation.
Exercise 6 The application of limit switch to retract the cylinder automatically

2.0 INTRODUCTION

Ladder diagrams (sometimes called "ladder logic") are a type of electrical notation
and symbol frequently used to describe the logic of electrical control systems. Relay
logic or relay ladder diagrams are used to illustrate how electromechanical switches
and relays are interconnected. There are differences in the way ladder logic was
implemented in computerized form as compared to hard wired. The basic component
of the control system is the control relay which is a solenoid that operates a number of
switches or contacts. The contacts come normally open and normally closed, normal
being when the relay is not energized. Relays come in various breeds like time delay
and latching types. Other components of the control system are the field devices such
as push buttons, limit switches, lights, and controlled devices like motor starters and
solenoid operated valves. Ladder diagrams show the logic of the controls, but they are
not used to build the system, a wiring diagram is used for that. But the wiring diagram
wouldn’t be used to trouble shoot with or show functionality, that’s where the ladder
is most useful.

When viewing the pictorial version of the controls as in the figure, one can see that
the devices on a rung of the ladder are in series reading horizontally and in parallel
reading vertically. Control voltage is supplied to the vertical rails, L1 being hot and
L2 being common or ground. In industry it is common to see 120vac control and 480
vac power circuits. Anything less than 600 volts is considered low voltage and
virtually everything will have an insulation rating of 600 volts. In this practical, the
symbol will be based on the JIC or Joint Industrial Council symbol.

3.0 EXERCISE

Draw and simulate the following circuit using available fluid power simulation
software. Then, assemble and operate the circuit.

3.1 CIRCUIT 1

In the first circuit, you are going to learn the basic hardwiring of an electrical circuit
that uses a direct and indirect control of an indicator/lamp. The circuit also teaches
you how to choose a normally open or normally closed contact, from a 24 VDC relay
coil.

3.2 CIRCUIT 2

In the second circuit, you are going to improve electrical circuit that uses combined
normally open and normally closed contact on a single circuit. You will also be
introduced with a method known as a latching circuit.

3.3 CIRCUIT 3

In circuit 3, improve the latching circuit by including a normally closed push button
switch to reset the previous circuit by pressing the button. Later, improve the circuit
by using a limit switch.

3.4 CIRCUIT 4

In circuit 4, the electro-pneumatic application is introduced. Double solenoid valve is

used as a memory circuit. When button A is pressed momentarily the cylinder will
extend and stay at extend position until button B is pressed. If button B is pressed
momentarily the cylinder will retract and stay at retract position until button A is
pressed.

3.5 CIRCUIT 5

In circuit 5, single solenoid valve and timer is used to control the system. The
electrical circuit is complete with latching and reset button. The timer is set at 5
seconds. When the start button is pressed momentarily, the timer will delay the
starting operation of the cylinder to extend by 5 seconds. If the stop button is pressed
momentarily the cylinder will retract immediately.

3.6 CIRCUIT 6

In circuit 6, the circuit is improved by changing the stop button with limit switch so
that the cylinder rod will automatically return. The indicator is also added to show
that the timer is already on. When the push button is pressed momentarily, the
indicator is on but the double acting cylinder will extend after 5 seconds, and retract
automatically when it reaches a limit switch. A single solenoid is used in the system.

QUESTION :

Develop a basic electro-pneumatic control for the problem stated. Use the given template to
answer the question. Draw and simulate the following circuit using FluidSIM software. Then,
assemble and operate the circuit.

Two double-acting cylinders are used to design pneumatic circuit. The operations of the
circuit are as follows:
 When the start push button is pressed momentarily, cylinder A will extend
immediately
 Cylinder B will only extend after 5 seconds.
 The buzzer will also on after 5 seconds (simultaneously with cylinder B extension).
 When the stop push button (different button) is pressed, cylinder A and B will retract
simultaneously
 The buzzer also off.
