Unit 6

Ecological literacy refers to understanding how natural systems support life on Earth and living accordingly. It involves understanding ecological principles like interdependence and applying them to create sustainable human communities. Developing ecological literacy requires developing empathy for all life, embracing sustainability, making invisible impacts visible, anticipating unintended consequences, and understanding nature sustains life. Fostering ecological literacy in students helps equip them to address environmental issues and care for the environment through outdoor science education experiences.

Ecological literacy

(Also referred to as Eco literacy) is the ability to understand the natural

systems that make life on earth possible.

 ability to understand the basic principles of ecology and to live accordingly.

 To be Eco literate means understanding the principles of organization of
ecological communities and using those principles for creating sustainable human
communities.
 Eco literacy concerns understanding the principles of organization of ecosystems
and their potential application to understanding how to build a
sustainable human society.
 It combines the sciences of systems and ecology in drawing together elements
required to foster learning processes toward a deep appreciation of nature and
our role in it.

Five Ways to Develop Eco literacy

1. Develop empathy for all forms of life

 consider the quality of life of other life forms, feel genuine concern about
their well-being, and act on that concern.
 recognizing the common needs we share with all organisms.
 Another way to develop empathy for other forms of life is by studying
indigenous cultures.

2. Embrace sustainability as a community practice

 By learning about the wondrous ways that plants, animals, and other
living things are interdependent, students are inspired to consider the role
of interconnectedness within their communities and see the value in
strengthening those relationships by thinking and acting cooperatively.

3. Make the invisible visible

 Some places on the planet are beginning to see evidence of climate

change but, most of us experience no changes.
 We should strive to develop ways of living that are more life-affirming and
we must find ways to make invisible things become visible.

4. Anticipate unintended consequences

 When an activity threatens to have a damaging impact on the
environment or human health, precautionary actions should be taken
regardless of whether a cause-and-effect relationship has been
scientifically confirmed.

5. Understand how nature sustains life

 Eco literate people have learned from nature that all living organisms are
members of a complex, interconnected web of life and that those
members inhabiting a particular place depend upon their
interconnectedness for survival.
 Eco literate people collectively practice a way of life that fulfills the needs
of the present generation while simultaneously supporting nature’s
inherent ability to sustain life into the future.

Eco literacy in school

 An ecological literacy equips students with the knowledge and competencies

necessary to address solution of environmental issues in an integrated way.
Fostering in students a value for the environment by incorporating outdoor
experiences in science education is the most important step in experiencing,
learning and caring balance.
