4 do during the quarantine? Did you watch TV? I know some people who did!
6 RADIO TEACHER: Kids, let me tell you a story. Ian and his friends enjoyed
7 watching football game on television. They were surprised when they saw the

11 RADIO TEACHER: Now look! What numbers are written on the next group of
12 discs? (PAUSE) 100! Nice! Their place value is hundreds. Now, it’s your turn
13 to count them. (PAUSE) Yes, there are six. Write six above them.
15 RADIO TEACHER: Next, what numbers are written on the next group of discs?
16 (PAUSE) Yes, 1000! Now, count how many are them then write the number you

7 RADIO TEACHER: Look at your modules! Can you see single squares? (PAUSE)
8 There it is! If it is just a single square or single mab, we call it unit. Again, we
9 call it? (PAUSE) Good. A unit represents place value ones. One square is equal
10 to one unit. Now, let's count how many units are there! One, two, three, four,
13 RADIO TEACHER: Next, look at the group of mabs in the next box. If we
14 combine 10 units and put them one on top of the other, we can form what we
15 call longs. Say it again with me. Longs! It’s easy to remember them because
16 they are long! Longs are under place value of tens. How many units are there
19 RADIO TEACHER: Are you still with me? Don’t sleep. (PAUSE) Moving on. Look
20 at the next group of mabs. (PAUSE) If we combine 10 longs and put them side
21 by side just like what you see on the module, we form what we call, flat! One

23 there are 100 units! (PAUSE) How many flats can you on your module? (PAUSE)

5 It’s not a period like that at the of the sentence, okay? Period here is made of three
place

7 Look again at the table I told you about. (PAUSE) Now on the box below that table,
there
8 are reminders. (PAUSE) Can you see it? (PAUSE) Later on, it will be discussed more.

11 TEACHER: Open your modules on page 14 and look under What is it (PAUSE) Below,
12 are the following important rules you have to remember to read and to write whole
13 numbers. Listen carefully. (PAUSE) Rule number 1: Read each group of digits from left
14 to right, then say the name of the group or period except in the unit periods. Example:
17 TEACHER: Kids, notice on your modules that we have 89 in the thousand period, and
18 523 in the unit period which are separated by space. So reading from the left to right

24 left to right. In the thousand period, we have the number 27 and in the unit period we
25 have there 341. So how do you read that? (PAUSE FOR 2 SECS). It’s Twenty-seven
28 TEACHER: Now, in writing the number we have rule number two. (PAUSE) Staring
29 from the right, count three places and separate unit period from the thousand period

5 TEACHER: How about we have one more example? Kids, try to write in symbols the

10 TEACHER: For rule number three: when writing numbers in symbols, use zero as a
11 place holder. Say we have the number sixty-five thousand, twenty-six. How do we
write
12 that in symbols? (PAUSE) Again, on your modules, the zero in the hundreds place has
13 no value but it is needed to hold the place. (PAUSE) Always remember, a period is
made
14 up of three place values before you begin entering digits in the thousands period.
16 TEACHER: One more example so you can understand better. Write down in symbols
17 the number thirty-one thousand, seven hundred five. (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS) You
should
18 have written 3,1 space or comma 7,0,5. (PAUSE) Is your answer the same?
20 TEACHER: How was it kids? Did you understand our discussion? (PAUSE) Well, let’s
23 TEACHER: When reading numbers up to 100 000, read each group of digits from left
24 to right, then say the name of the period except for the unit period. And when writing
25 numbers up to 100 000, separate the unit periods from the thousand period by
putting

2 HOST: Yesterday, your teachers have discussed about the rules on how to correctly
read
3 and write numbers up to 100 000. But previously, we have also talked about the place
4 value and value of digits in a number? (PAUSE) Why don’t we review them, shall we?
5 (PAUSE) Remember, the place value tells the position, again tells the position of a
given
6 digit in a number. Not only that, place value also gives us idea what is the value or
worth
7 of any digit in a given number. On your modules, page 18, (PAUSE) you can see a
small

18 TEACHER: Thank you very much, Teacher _____! Hello, hello Grade 4 pupils! How do

(PAUSE)
21 Of course, there are times when we need to know which numbers are greater, lesser
and
22 are equal! To make it easier, we will use relation symbols! Again, we will use, relation
23 symbols! But how do we really determine which is which? Well, we have simple steps
to
24 follow.
26 TEACHER: Step number1, align horizontally the digits with the same place value. Look
27 at your module on page 20. The numbers of Tilapia Mang Tony harvested are written
28 and aligned there. 17 546 for the number of Tilapia today and 17 845 Tilapia he
29 harvested yesterday. (PAUSE) Step number 2. Compare the digits in each place value
30 starting from the left. The first pair of digits that are different in values will tell you
1 HOST: Look at the table. Let’s compare the digits in ten thousands place. (PAUSE)
2 They are the same or equal! Let’s proceed to the next place value, thousands.
3 Are the digits in that place value different or equal? (PAUSE) Again, they are equal!
4 So we will proceed to the next place value, hundreds! Now, compare them.
5 Are they different or equal? (PAUSE) They are different! Which is greater or higher,
(PAUSE)
7 Of course, 17 845! So, on what day did Mang Tony harvested more? (PAUSE)
Yesterday!
8 Very good!
10 TEACHER: Now, there are terminologies or words, notations and symbols you must
13 TEACHER: Look there. Can you see symbol that looks like an arrow head that points
to
14 the right? We read that as greater than and it is used when the digit or number on the
15 left is larger than the digit or number on the right. Again, we use the symbol greater
16 than is the number on the left is larger than that on the right. Got it well? (PAUSE)
17 examples: a.) 4 354 is greater than the number 4,205. Is that right? Why don’t you try
18 to align the numbers quickly? (PAUSE FOR 3 SECS) Is it correct? Yes, it is. Next
example
21 TEACHER: Next, can you see symbol that looks like an arrow head that points to the
22 left? We read that as less than and it is used when the digit or number on the left is
23 smaller than the digit or number on the right. Again how we read that? (PAUSE) Less
24 than good. We use that hen the number on the left is smaller than that on the right.
Let
25 me give you examples. The number 9 674 is less than 9 789. How do we know that is
26 correct? If you align the numbers, you can see that the digits on the hundreds place
27 value, which are 6 and 7 are different. Which one is lesser? It’s 6! Therefore, 9 674 is
28 less than 9 789! One more example: 12 583 is less than 13 002? Try to check if that is
MORE
1 TEACHER: One last symbol. That symbol is read as equal to or equals. Repeat, equal
to
2 or equals! When do we use it? (PAUSE) Hmmm, we use that symbol if the number on
3 the left is same or equal to the number on the right. That means, if it is a large
number
4 and all the digits there are the same, they are equal! Examples: 4 273 is equal to the
5 sum of 4000 + 200 + 70 + 3! Add them together to see for yourself. Next, 5 650 is
equal
8 TEACHER: So, how is it? Did you follow my discussion? Don’t worry, you can always
