2Q-S3 Graph of Polynomial Functions

The document discusses graphs of polynomial functions. It explains that polynomial graphs are continuous, intersecting the x-axis at different points depending on their degree: first degree intersects once, second degree twice, and so on. It also covers transformations that can stretch, shrink, or shift polynomial graphs, and how the leading term determines whether a graph rises or falls with increasing or decreasing x-values. Examples are provided to illustrate key concepts. The purpose is to develop understanding of polynomial graphs and encourage positive thinking in math learning.

Graph of

Polynomial Functions
Learning Objectives:

a. Understand the graph of polynomial functions.

b. Develop positive thinking towards new topic in math.

Graph of Polynomial Functions
Graph of Polynomial Functions
▪ The graph of polynomial function is
continuous.
▪ It has no breaks, gaps, or holes.
▪ Its domain is the set of real numbers.

4
Graph of Polynomial Functions

▪ First Degree Polynomial

▪ Intersects at x – axis for
once.

5
Graph of Polynomial Functions

▪ Second Degree Polynomial

▪ Intersects at x – axis,
twice.

6
Graph of Polynomial Functions

▪ Third Degree Polynomial

▪ Intersects at x – axis,
thrice.

7
Graph of Polynomial Functions

▪ Fourth Degree Polynomial

▪ Intersects at x – axis, 4
times.

8
Graph of Polynomial Functions

▪ Fifth Degree Polynomial

▪ Intersects at x – axis, 5
times.

9
The x – intercept in a graph represents a zero of the
polynomial function.

Polynomial functions may also have imaginary roots but these

cannot be determined using the graph.

10
The graph of an odd – degree polynomial function (linear,
cubic, quintic, seventh – degree and so on) crosses the x – axis
at least once.

Number of Number of
intersection intersection
with x – axis :1 with x – axis :1
The graph of an even – degree polynomial function (quadratic,
quartic, sixth - degree, eighth – degree and so on) may or may
not cross the x – axis.

Number of Number of
intersection intersection
with x – axis :0 with x – axis :2
Power Functions
▪ The simplest polynomial functions.
▪ These are of the form 𝑃 𝑥 = 𝑥 𝑛 , where n is a nonnegative integer.

13
Power Functions
The even – degree power 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟖
functions touch the origin and are
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟒
symmetric with respect to y – axis.

The graph gets closer to the y-axis 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐

(narrower) as the value of n
increases.
Domain: set of real numbers
Range: set of all nonnegative
numbers.
14
Power Functions
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟗
The odd – degree power functions
touch the origin and are symmetric 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟓

with respect to origin.

𝒚 = 𝒙𝟑
The graph gets closer to the y-axis
(narrower) as the value of n
increases.
Domain: set of real numbers
Range: set of real number
15
Transformations of the graphs
Transformation may mean the stretching, shrinking, or shifting
(or any combination of these)

▪ The figure shows the graph of 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟑

𝑓 𝑥 = −𝑥 3 . It is similar to the
graph of 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 3 but the
negative coefficient results in
reflection with respect to 𝒚 = −𝒙𝟑
x – axis.

16
Transformations of the graphs
Transformation may mean the stretching, shrinking, or shifting
(or any combination of these)

▪ The figure shows the graph 𝒚 = (𝒙 − 𝟐)𝟒 +𝟑

of 𝑓 𝑥 = (𝑥 − 2)4 + 3. It is
similar to the graph of
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 4 , shifted 2 units
to the right and 3 units up.
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟒

17
Leading Term Test
It indicates the eventual rise or fall of the function as x increases
or decreases without bound.

▪ Recall, leading coefficient of the polynomial is the coefficient term with

highest degree. The leading term of a polynomial is the term of the
polynomial with the highest degree.

18
Leading coefficient: positive, Degree: odd
Falls left, Rises right

Leading coefficient: negative, Degree: odd

Rises left, Falls right
19
Leading coefficient: positive, Degree: even
Rises left, Rises right

Leading coefficient: negative, Degree: even

Falls left, Falls right

ACTIVITY:

1. Graph 𝑦 = 𝑥 5 and the transformation 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 5)2 . Determine

the domain and range of the transformation.

2. What is the end behavior of the function ℎ 𝑥 = 4𝑥 5 − 3𝑥 − 10?

21
Assignment: Submission on Friday, 11:59AM

1. How are zeros, roots, and x – intercepts of polynomial functions

related? How are they different?

2. What did you find most challenging in applying the intermediate value
theorem and the location principle in locating zeros of polynomial
functions?

3. How did you assess your current understanding of the previously

presented concepts on polynomial functions?

(5 points, _ Justify the answer (2 points), _ clear and concise, _ correct, _ effort)
22
ANSWER KEY:
1. Graph 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 and the transformation 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 3)2 . Determine
the domain and range of the transformation.

𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 𝒚 = 𝟐(𝒙 − 𝟑)𝟐
Domain: Set of real number Domain: Set of real number
Range: 𝑦 ≥ 0 Range: 𝑦 ≥ 3

23
2. What is the end behavior of the functionℎ 𝑥 = 4𝑥 5 − 3𝑥 − 10?

* Since the leading coefficient is positive (5) and the degree is odd
(3), the graph falls to the left and rises to the right.
