Communication Theory - M2: Final Term Exam

PTV represents the state-owned television channel in Pakistan established in 1964, while CNN represents the privately-owned Cable News Network established in 1980 in the US. PTV acts as a mouthpiece of the government and lacks freedom of expression and credibility, focusing more on reporting government activities. In contrast, CNN is independent of government influence and focuses on impartial news reporting based on newsworthiness rather than giving coverage to government officials. While PTV's programming quality has remained poor, CNN provides higher quality news and entertainment content.

Is Media/Press free in Pakistan? Compare CNN with PTV as from the

perspective of their ownership and freedom of expression and support your
answer with any particular event/situation/case. (35) Marks

Q1) Is Media/Press free in Pakistan? (10 Marks)

 Press freedom has always been a problem of Pakistan. Different authorities used
legal and constitutional means to control the press from open discussion and
analysis. In its seventy years of history, we find military rule or dictatorship
mostly. Because of the instability of the democracy there is no any specified
freedom of media in Pakistan. Press in Pakistan generally faces dangers, violence,
financial weight, etc. like before during Gen Zia period there were loads of
limitations over the media and media houses were not even allowed to criticize the
wrong policies of the government. Also known as the worst time for media.

The country's law on blasphemy has been used against columnists and journalists.
However, after 2002, Gen Prervaiz Musharaf declared the media of Pakistan a
liberal media, he expelled almost all the restrictions over the media but today still
press/media was operated in a mixed character.

Q3) Pick and analyze any particular reference event/situation/case

from past to support your answer (10 Marks)
 For almost five years, Talat Hussain, a well-known Pakistani journalist, hosted a
popular current affair talk show on Geo TV, *Naya Pakistan* openly discussing
the political issues of the day. But last year all that changed. Forced to comply
with a total blackout of news that criticized the military or the government of the
new prime minister, Imran Khan, Hussain found himself unable to speak freely

“I was told by Geo News administration that they could not air my analysis
because the army, represented by ISPR [the media wing of the Pakistan armed
forces], was very unhappy and they would shut down channel transmission if I
continued to speak like I did, which they said was financially ruinous for them,”
said Talat Hussain
