Educ 276 Final Project

The document describes a game called "How Many Bees in the Hive?" designed to improve students' fluency with addition and subtraction facts through 10. The game uses a bee hive theme and has students take turns rolling dice and solving math problems to place base 10 blocks, or "bees," into the hive. It is intended for first grade students and helps teach a state standard on demonstrating fluency with addition and subtraction facts. The collaborative nature of the game also helps build math and teamwork skills.

“How Many Bees in the Hive?”- An Addition and Subtraction Fluency Game

The game that I created is titled “How Many Bees in the Hive?”. This game is a bee-hive-

themed game that focuses on mastering the fluency of addition and subtraction facts. Students

will solve the addition and subtraction facts around the bee hive to fill the hive with base 10

blocks, or “bees.” The learning objective of this game is based on a South Carolina State

Standard of Mathematics in the first grade. The standard is 1.ATO.6: The student will

demonstrate fluency with addition and related subtraction facts through 10. The speed of the

game will help students improve their fluency, while the accountability of their partners will help

maintain their accuracy. This foundational skill is critical for success in upper-level mathematics,

so this game will be a tool that ensures proper demonstration of the skill. The collaboration that

this game requires will improve students’ team work skills as well as build a classroom

community. This game may be utilized is many settings, including at home and at school.

However, it has been designed as a collaborative group activity during a blended learning

rotation. After proper explanation, students should be able to play the game together without any

further guidance from the teacher.

“How Many Bees in the Hive?” is intended for students at the first-grade level. Students

in this grade typically range from ages 6-7. In this age range, students are between the

preoperational stage and the concrete operations stage of Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive

Development. An important aspect to note about the Concrete Operations stage is that it is the

stage where students are able to understand numbers. This game will allow students to truly

begin to understand the numbers that they are working with by making the process interactive

and visually appealing. Because of this aspect, the game will work alongside many other

experiences and learning opportunities to help students progress to the next level of

development.

This game is very easy to follow, explain, and set up. Below, I have provided a materials

list, as well as detailed procedures.

Materials:

 “How Many Bees in the Hive?” game board

 Dice

 Base 10 cubes

Procedures:

 2-6 players per game.

 The order of players should go from youngest to oldest.

 Player rolls the dice.

 Player begins at “Start” and moves the number of spaces according to the number on the

dice.

 Player solves addition or subtraction fact, then places base ten block on the correct sum

or difference in the hive.

 Continue these steps in order until all numbers in the hive have been covered with a base

10 block.

 The player to place a base 10 block on the last number wins.
