Quarter 2 Learning Activity Sheet 1 (Flow of Energy)

The document discusses adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP). It states that ATP is the key chemical compound cells use to store and release energy, with phosphate being the key to ATP's energy. It notes that ATP has three phosphate groups while ADP has two, and provides an analogy that ATP is like a recharged battery while ADP is the discharged form. The document also labels the different parts of the ATP and ADP molecules, including the adenine, ribose, and phosphate groups.

Pre-activity

1. What chemical compound do cells use to store and release energy?

Adenosine Triphosphate
2. What is the key to ATP’s energy? The key to ATP's energy is Phosphate.
3. What is the difference between ATP and ADP? The difference between ATP
and ADP is that Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) has three phosphate group
while Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP) has only two phosphate group.
4. What analogy can you make for ATP and ADP? ATP is like a rechargeable
battery. When it’s fully charged, it’s ATP. When it’s run down, it’s ADP.
However, when the battery runs down, it just gets charged up again.
5. When you remove a phosphate from ATP, energy is released and ATP turns
into ADP.
6. When you add a phosphate to ADP, energy is added and ADP turns back into
ATP.

Chemical Energy and ATP

1. What is one of the principal chemical compounds that cells use to
store energy? Adenosine Triphosphate
2. How is ATP different from ADP? ATP has 3 phosphate group while
ADP has only two phosphate group
3. Label each part of the ATP molecule illustrated below.

Adenine Ribose Phosphate Group

Reflection
After I read the article entitled "Adenosine
Triphosphate: Does it help cancer patients get bigger
and stronger?" that explains the effects of
supplementing Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) in
cancer patients to help them maintain their body
composition and to regain appetite. Based on
investigative trials, only those minor cases of cancer
are successful in gaining positive effects such as
improvements in weight, body composition, appetite,
and quality of life. Moreover, there are also different
factors that affect the health of cancer patients such
as the placebo effect where 40% of cancer patients
reported an improvement. Based on the
investigations elaborated in this article, I think the
examiner and researcher should continue executing
trials in supplementing ATP to cancer patients
because this will help them to expand their study,
provide the best means of minimizing the effect of
confounding. This article really helps me a lot in
understanding the concept of Adenosine triphosphate
(ATP). We know that ATP is the energy currency of the
cell. Our body takes energy to maintain proper
functioning. And not only that, but it also gives me
information about how ATP helps our body function
especially to those cancer patients.
