Blended Learning Lesson Plan

This blended learning lesson plan teaches students about finding the area of triangles. It uses stations for introduction, teacher-directed practice, collaboration, and independent practice. The introduction uses a YouTube video song to teach the area formula. The teacher-directed station has the teacher model measuring and calculating triangle areas. The collaboration station has students work in pairs to measure and calculate triangle areas on worksheets. The independent station has students practice on an online math game. The closure reviews the lesson and song.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Around the Room in Area

Objectives:
Students will be able to practice the area formula for a variety of triangles.
Students will be able to solve for the area of a variety triangles.

State Standards:
6.GM.1 Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by
composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these
techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Context:
A math standard for the sixth grade is to learn how to find the area for triangles as well as
a variety of shapes. This lesson will be the introduction to this standard and will focus on finding
the area of right triangles. In fifth grade, students learned about area and how to calculate it for
simple quadrilaterals (squares and rectangles). Students will be able to use this prior
understanding of area and apply it to triangles. Students will learn how the formula for area will
change depending on the shape. After this lesson, students will continue to learn the various area
formulas. After they have grasped that concept, we will begin looking at shapes that are irregular
and need to be broken down in shapes that we do recognize, in order to find the area. To prepare
them for the larger lesson, students will gain the skill of solving for the area of a triangle, in
which they may use to find the area of an irregular shape.

Procedures:

Introduction (15 minutes):

To begin the lesson the students will be on the carpet at the front of the classroom
and I will ask the students what they remember about what area is and how to find it. Once we
have reviewed the general concept of area, we will switch the discussion to the area of triangles.
I will then introduce the formula of a triangle (A= (1/2)b*h). To make the students think about
the process of finding area, I will ask the students why they think that the formula is different for
a triangle and then we will talk about it. After introducing the concept of area for triangle, I will
show the students a video of a song to help them memorize the formula
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUkNihBmd_g). After watching the video, the students and
I will practice the short song and dance. Once the students have retained the song, then I will
introduce the stations to them. I will remind them that when we work in groups we should be
helping each other and sharing ideas on how to solve the problem, not telling each other the
answer or getting off track. Since this is an introduction lesson, I will group the students to
where I have a mix of all skill levels in each group. The reasoning for these groups is to give
each group a student that usually excels in math, that way they will be able to help other students
grasp the new concept.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

At this station, we will review the area for a triangle. To practice this concept I
will draw a triangle on to the kidney shaped table with an expo marker. For the first problem, I
will measure the sides with the students help. I will go over the base and the height and what
goes where in the formula. Once we have a completed formula, I will lead the students through
finding the solution. After we have practiced one triangle together, I will give a couple of
students the marker and let them draw a triangle (I will have erased the previous one). With the
new triangle, the students and I will repeat the same step of identifying the parts of the triangle
and how to plug it into the formula, and then we will solve. To wrap up the station, I will have
one last student draw a triangle on the table. To check their comprehension on this new concept,
I will have the students direct me into solving for the area of the triangle. This will allow me to
gauge what they have retained on the process and formula for area of triangles.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

At the collaborative station the students will be working together to find the area
of triangles. In one section of the room I will have triangles outlined in masking tape. The
triangles will be on the floor, wall, or tables. In pairs, the students will chose a triangle to work
on together. The students will have to measure the triangle and identify the base and height of the
triangle and then plug it into the formula. They will have a worksheet that will outline the
process for them with fill-in-blanks. The purpose of the partnership is to allow the students the
opportunity to help each other with the new concept. If one student is skipping a step then the
other student will be able to help them. In the 15 minutes allowed, the students will have enough
time to do three or four different triangles. Once they have finished they may check their answers
on the answer sheet that will be taped to the wall with a piece of paper to cover the answers. This
will allow the students immediate feedback on the problems that they did and any mistakes that
they made.

Independent Digital (15minutes):

The independent digital station will measure the students’ progress on the new
concept. The students will be working individually on their I-Pads on a website called
MathGames (https://www.mathgames.com/skill/6.121-area-of-right-triangles). The website has
an activity that works on the area of right triangles. The students will complete the assignment to
practice what they have been learning. The game will be assigned through Edmodo, so it will be
easy to access. Once the students have finished the assignment, it will show up on the teacher
page for the website and I will be able to see who is understanding the concept and who might
need extra help. If the students finish the assignment early, then they may get on the math
website Prodigy. Prodigy ( https://www.prodigygame.com/) is a game that is similar to World of
Warcraft, but it is more kid-friendly and allows the students to practice math skills.

Closure (5minutes):
After each group has had the chance to rotate to each station, we will meet back at
the front of the classroom on the carpet. I will not do an ending assessment since I am able to
track their grasp of the concept at the independent digital station. Instead, the students and I will
spend the last five minutes of the lesson reviewing the main concept. I will ask the class what
they have learned, and call on students who raise their hand to share. To conclude the lesson, we
will also review and repeat the song and dance from earlier in the lesson
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUkNihBmd_g). This is a fun and interesting way to get the
students engaged and thinking about the formula for the area of a triangle.
Rationale:

1. Area of Triangle Song

This is a short video of a class singing the formula to find the area of a triangle. I will use this
video to teach the song to my students. A song is easy and catchy way to learn and memorize an
important formula that is also fun for the students. It supports the standards and the objectives
because it reinforces the main concept of the formula that they will need to know in order to
achieve the objectives. This song is useful for all students because it is short and easy to
remember so that if a student is struggling they have a unique way to remember the formula, and
for students that may not need the extra help, it is still a fun way to recite the formula for area of
a triangle.

2. MathGames.com Activity
This website is a good tool because it has multiple resources and activities for each grade
level and math unit. The activities are usually shorter and therefore, it is not time consuming or
tedious for the students. The most useful part about this website is that it can connect with
Edmodo. Having this capability allows the teacher to have access to the students overall progress
on assignments. The activity on the area of right triangles supports the standards and objectives
because it puts to work the concept of the formula. The students will have individual practice
with the new material and it will automatically go to where the teacher can see the consensus of
the class to determine if you need to spend more time on the unit. This website is useful for all
learned because it has multiple tools within the activity. If you have a student who struggles at
reading, the website will read the question to your student. The website also offers a blank space
for you to work your problems online, in case your student does not want to write it by hand. The
website also allows students to unlock harder levels; this is useful for the students that excel in
math and need a challenge.

3. Prodigy
Prodigy is a unique gaming website that allows kids to practice their math skills as well
as be creative. This app will be used if the students finish their independent digital assignment
first. Prodigy aligns with the standards and objectives because it supports the lesson material as
well as builds on previous math skills and challenges students to new lessons. This website is
good for every student because it operates on a system of levels. The more problems you get
right and opponents you beat, the higher the level. When the level gets higher than the problems
get harder. In contrast, if you are struggling with a concept you can stay on that level as long as
you need in order to comprehend that skill.
