Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title:
Around the Room in Area
Objectives:
Students will be able to practice the area formula for a variety of triangles.
Students will be able to solve for the area of a variety triangles.
State Standards:
6.GM.1 Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by
composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these
techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Context:
A math standard for the sixth grade is to learn how to find the area for triangles as well as
a variety of shapes. This lesson will be the introduction to this standard and will focus on finding
the area of right triangles. In fifth grade, students learned about area and how to calculate it for
simple quadrilaterals (squares and rectangles). Students will be able to use this prior
understanding of area and apply it to triangles. Students will learn how the formula for area will
change depending on the shape. After this lesson, students will continue to learn the various area
formulas. After they have grasped that concept, we will begin looking at shapes that are irregular
and need to be broken down in shapes that we do recognize, in order to find the area. To prepare
them for the larger lesson, students will gain the skill of solving for the area of a triangle, in
which they may use to find the area of an irregular shape.

Procedures:
Closure (5minutes):
After each group has had the chance to rotate to each station, we will meet back at
the front of the classroom on the carpet. I will not do an ending assessment since I am able to
track their grasp of the concept at the independent digital station. Instead, the students and I will
spend the last five minutes of the lesson reviewing the main concept. I will ask the class what
they have learned, and call on students who raise their hand to share. To conclude the lesson, we
will also review and repeat the song and dance from earlier in the lesson
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUkNihBmd_g). This is a fun and interesting way to get the
students engaged and thinking about the formula for the area of a triangle.
Rationale:
2. MathGames.com Activity
This website is a good tool because it has multiple resources and activities for each grade
level and math unit. The activities are usually shorter and therefore, it is not time consuming or
tedious for the students. The most useful part about this website is that it can connect with
Edmodo. Having this capability allows the teacher to have access to the students overall progress
on assignments. The activity on the area of right triangles supports the standards and objectives
because it puts to work the concept of the formula. The students will have individual practice
with the new material and it will automatically go to where the teacher can see the consensus of
the class to determine if you need to spend more time on the unit. This website is useful for all
learned because it has multiple tools within the activity. If you have a student who struggles at
reading, the website will read the question to your student. The website also offers a blank space
for you to work your problems online, in case your student does not want to write it by hand. The
website also allows students to unlock harder levels; this is useful for the students that excel in
math and need a challenge.
3. Prodigy
Prodigy is a unique gaming website that allows kids to practice their math skills as well
as be creative. This app will be used if the students finish their independent digital assignment
first. Prodigy aligns with the standards and objectives because it supports the lesson material as
well as builds on previous math skills and challenges students to new lessons. This website is
good for every student because it operates on a system of levels. The more problems you get
right and opponents you beat, the higher the level. When the level gets higher than the problems
get harder. In contrast, if you are struggling with a concept you can stay on that level as long as
you need in order to comprehend that skill.
