V. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

The total volume for test tube samples 1-5 is 10 ml, each sample have different
concentrations and volumetric ratios of water-blue dye solution (NaOCl) as classified in Table
4. The working solution is taken to be test tube 1 . Using UV-VIS the highest absorbance (0.707) of
this sample lies at ƛmax = 600. This wavelength is used to compute for the concentration of the working
solution which is 5.123 ×10−6 M . Also at wavelength 600 increments and decrements of +20 were
considered to obtain the absorbance listed in Table 2. The maximum absorbance is 1.272 at wavelength
620. At wavelength 620, the readings for test tubes 2,3,4 and 5 were taken and is listed from Table 3.
To determine the rate law, slopes for the 1st run and 2nd run must be calculated from the graph.
For the 1st run the slope is found to be -0.0038 as seen from figure 2. The 2nd run has a slope of
-0.0023 as seen from figure 3, and both result means the reactions are first order.

VI. CONCLUSION

In this experiment the order of reaction with respect to NaOCl is tested and is determined to be
first order for both the 1st and the 2nd run.

VIII. ABSTRACT OF THE EXPERIMENT

In this experiment the reaction of blue dye with NaOCl was tested to determine the order of
reaction from the graph plotted at different time intervals. Initially at 50s and followed by 20s.
Absorbance was taken by UV-VIS by 2 trials, one is the working solution—test tube 1 and the
other diluted at half NaOCl concentration.
