ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT

Content Standard:

The learner realizes the rigors of crafting one’s speech.

Performance Standard:

The learner proficiently delivers various speeches using the principles of effective
speech delivery.

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:


a. identify the different principles of speech delivery;
b. appraise the importance of every principle of effective speech delivery
in our daily basis through oral recitation; and
c. apply the principles in planning, crafting, and delivering a speech.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

III. PROCEDURE

A. Preliminaries

a. Drill/Review
 “Bookmark Generalization Activity”
The students will be asked to write down their learning’s based
on the past discussion on the prepared generalization paper.
 A follow-up question will be asked:
1. What is the significance of knowing those things as a Senior
High School student?
2. How will you apply those learnings in your chosen profession
in line with your strand right now?

b. Motivation
 “Think This, Write That”
 This activity is hinged on the “Let’s Warm Up” activity by
Sipacio and Balgos (2016) in their book, Oral Communication in
Context.
 The students will be tasked to study the scenario given and
provide a brief answer to the questions given through oral
recitation.
 Each question shall only require them of a two-sentenced
answer

Scenario: Despite the pandemic, you are determined to still plan


an activity related to the advent season. As the president, you wish
to craft an online fundraiser for elementary pupils who were unable
to continue their education due to the rise of the pandemic. After
crafting the plan, you intend to use your social media platform to
present the proposal.

 The following will be asked to the students:


1. How will you plan the fundraiser?
2. How will you deliver the proposal to your social media
platform?

B. Presentation

1. Activity Proper
 “Chunk It Now - Activity”

a. The students will be divided into 4 groups.


b. The teacher will present a chart having 4 different columns
which includes the words: articulation; modulation; stage
presence; and facial expressions, gestures, and movements.
c. Each group should jot down anything that may come up in their
mind seeing the given words; it could be a word or a phrase.
d. The teacher will check the written words/phrases as he discuss
the lesson itself.

2. Analysis

According to Lucas (2011) in his book, “The Art of Public


Speaking”, a good delivery means that you are capable and able to
present your message in a clear, coherent, an interesting way. In
addition to this, he emphasizes that a good deliver of content conveys
the speaker’s ideas clearly without distracting the audience.

PRINCIPLES OF SPEECH DELIVERY

1. Articulation - Enunciating the words and speaking with clear


diction that effectively transmits the Message of the Speaker.
It is the correct way of saying the word, whether they are
familiar.
2. Modulation - The capability to adjust or manipulate the
resonance and timbre of the vocal tone.
3. Stage Presence - The ability to “own” the stage, of the
Speaker being able to fill the space and project his/her
personality to the Audience.
4. Facial Expressions, Gestures, and Movements
a. Facial Expressions - It conveys the feelings of the
speaker.
b. Gestures – It is a movement of part of the body,
especially a hand or the head, to express an idea or
meaning.
c. Movements - This ought to signal the transition from
one idea to what is the proceeding or the next.

3. Abstraction
 What is a speech?
 When do we usually have a speech?
 What are the four principles of speech?
 What is the significance of knowing those four principles?
 How important does each principle to every public speech?
 As a Senior High School student, what can you do to establish
good relationship within the school community by the help of
speeches?

4. Application
 “Think, Write, Talk!”

a. The class will be divided into 4 groups.


b. The students will cater their imagination and creativity.
c. Their task is to create a group persuasive speech depicting one
of the social issues that we are facing right now in the
Philippines.
d. The students must apply all the principles in speech delivery in
their presentation.
e. The students will be given 5 minutes to create their brief yet
persuasive speech and a maximum 3 minutes to deliver.
f. Each group will be graded according to the following criteria:

Content – 20 pts.
Grammar – 10 pts
Delivery
Articulation - 10 pts.
Modulation - 10 pts.
Stage Presence - 10 pts.
Facial Expressions - 5 pts.
Gestures - 5 pts.

IV. EVALUATION
