Climate Change Impact PDF

The document discusses examples of environmental changes over past decades in several locations around the world. It describes how the Great Barrier Reef in Australia has experienced coral bleaching due to rising ocean temperatures. It notes that Venice, Italy has experienced more frequent flooding in recent decades, with four floods in the last 20 years. It also discusses how Glacier National Park in Montana is losing its glaciers due to rising global temperatures.

Examples of Environmental Changes Over the Past Decades
The Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Located at the northeast coast of Australia with a span of more than 1,400 miles
and considered as the largest coral reef system in the world, the Great Barrier Reef
draws millions of snorkelers and scuba divers each year. However, it did not save itself
from the damaging effects of climate change, the rising temperature of oceans have
caused coral bleaching wherein it turns to white and becomes prone to mass die-offs.

Venice, Italy

The recent flooding in Venice was caused by a combination of high spring tides and
a meteorological storm surge driven by strong sirocco winds blowing north-eastwards
across the Adriatic Sea. St Mark's Square is one of the lowest parts of the city as well as
one of the worst hit areas. St Mark's Basilica was flooded for the sixth time in 1,200 years,
according to church records. A member of St Mark's council said that four of those floods
had now occurred within the past 20 years.
Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is considered as home to hundreds of species of animals

and thousands of plants but as the temperature globally continuously rises, it is rapidly
losing one of its main attractions which are glaciers that give it its name. According to data
released in May 2017 by the U.S. Geological Survey and Portland State University, a
warming climate has significantly reduced the size of 39 different glaciers in the park since
1966—the worst of which have seen reductions up to 85 percent. As the glaciers melt,
scientists predict there will be little ice left after a couple more decades, leaving none at all
after the century.
Montalivet, France

Located in Southwestern France’s Atlantic coast, this beach was first discovered
as a coastal resort in the mid-19th century. It beach once won the prestigious Blue Flag
award for cleanliness which is quite ironic with the right side photo wherein trash are
rampant during a winter season. This is possibly caused by the shifting ocean currents
helped along by seasonal storm winds, which can cause the marine debris caught in the
vast North Atlantic garbage patch to move by as much as 800 miles north or south.
The Dead Sea, Asia
Shrinking at a rate of around three feet a year, the body of water has already lost
one-third of its surface area since development in the region started earlier this century.
Different constructions over the years has reduced inflow water levels to just five percent
of their original volume while its minerals were said to be therapeutic and its extraction
by cosmetic companies caused severe damages. The Middle Eastern climate makes it
difficult for the lake to replenish itself which results to expert’s estimate that it will be
completely dry by 2050.

Cagayan, Philippines

Cagayan, a province located in the Cagayan Valley region and the northeastern
tip of Luzon, is one of the areas hit the hardest by the latest typhoon Ulysses, it brought
what is now known as the “worst flooding” in the region in decades, according to
Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba. Deforestation is one of the said reasons why the
flood became so devastating, the trees are being cut and forests are being threatened,
not only by illegal logging, but also by yellow corn farming and the use of herbicide that
kills vegetation and weakens the soil.

Metro Manila, Philippines

A week after the Philippine government imposed a lockdown on its largest island,
Luzon, on March 15 to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic, photos of Manila’s
smog-free skyline with its mountain backdrop started circulating on social media. Just
before the lockdown, the Philippines ranked 57th out of 98 countries in IQAir AirVisual’s
list of the world’s most polluted countries in 2019, this is due to mass transport energy
emissions where fossil fuel are being used instead of clean sources of energy. The
photo above might not be showcasing the before and after effects of climate change but
it shows how human activities greatly contribute to air pollution, the major cause of
climate change, and how its suspension means better air quality.
