Polymers and alkoxysilanes are largely used in academic and industrial applications thanks to
their peculiar feature to bond organic and inorganic phases, modify metallic substrates or
inorganic nanoparticles or impart specific properties to sol-gel networks. Indeed,
organosilanes (RSi(OR’)3) exhibit dual reactivity with alkoxysilane groups (Si(OR’)3) that can
react with hydroxyl groups of inorganic components and an organic moiety (R) which can
participate to polymerization or give additional functionalities.
Through the framework of a Ph.D work, SPECIFIC POLYMERS has been working on the
development of a wide range of organosilane compounds to answer the specific requirements
of applications in various fields: coatings, automotive, energy or biomedical.

Hydrophobic sol-gel
Last year, research efforts were conducted on the
implementation of a highly stable and efficient water and oil-
repellent optical coatings. It was demonstrated that with a
minimal proportion of fluoroalkylsilanes (SP-02-004) introduced
into a sol-gel formulation similar properties than with a
classic silanization could be obtained according to a more
industrial compliant and straightforward process. Further details
on the influence of the fluoroalkylsilane’s distribution on
resulting coating properties are reported in this paper[1]. This
work opens interesting perspectives in the development of
hydrophobic coatings as this technique can be extended to
silicones, alkyls or perfluoropolyalkylethers bearing
alkoxysilanes moieties.

Si-Polymers®
With the increasing need of materials combining the advantages
of both organic and inorganic phases, polymers bearing
alkoxysilanes have become key materials in this area.
SPECIFIC POLYMERS has thus been developing a wide range
of polymeric precursors such as Polyethylene glycol
(PEG)[2], Polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF), PDMS,
Polybutadiene, Polyester polyols, etc. Depending on
customer’s needs, the Si-functionalization can be oriented on
the chain ends or on the lateral chains. Some examples of
Si-Polymers® from our catalog are represented here. These
materials can be blended into polymeric matrices or used as
additives into sol-gel formulations.

MAPC1 Acid – SP-41-007 >
MAPC1 Acid – SP-41-007 is a methacrylate monomer bearing
phosphonic acid moieties that can react with a wide range of metal
salts and oxides. Such anchoring groups were proved to bring higher
adhesion to metallic surfaces than alkoxysilane counterparts.
Such monomers can be polymerized or copolymerized to design
phosphorus-containing polymers of interest in various industrial
sectors such as corrosion inhibition[3], halogen-free flame
retardants[4], fuel cells membranes or in the biomedical field[5] (i.e. drug delivery, tissue
engineering, dental applications, etc.). SP is selling 10g batches for R&D purposes.
