All U-bolts supplied shall, in general, comply with the latest edition of following
international standards:
(a) ISO 630: Structural steels - Plates, wide flats, bars, sections and profiles
(b) ISO 898-1: Mechanical properties or fasteners made of carbon steel and alloy steel -
Part 1: Bolts, screws and studs
(c) ISO 1460: Metallic coatings - Hot dip galvanized coating on ferrous materials -
Gravimetric determination of the mass per unit area

the ISO 2859 attribute sampling system
(f) ISO 6892: Metallic materials - Tensile testing at ambient temperature

2.2 Alternative standards

The supplier may propose alternative standards provided it is proven that it gives an
equivalent degree of quality as applicable standards. But the acceptance of the alternative
standard is limited to GECOL for approval.

2.3 Precedence of standards

In case of discrepancy between this specification and any of the applicable standards, the
following order of precedence shall apply:
(a) Technical specification of GECOL
(b) Applicable standards
(c) Accepted alternative standards

3 Definition

3.1 Classification
There are two kinds for crossarm in overhead distribution line and for anchor block.

3.2 Minimum breaking strength

Minimum load specified by the purchaser or declared by the supplier at which
mechanical failure will not take place.

3.3 Lot
A group of articles offered for acceptance from the same manufacturer, of the same
design and manufactured under presumed similar conditions of production. One or more
lots may be offered together for acceptance; the lot(s) offered may consist of the whole, or
part, of the quantity ordered

4 Kinds
The kinds of U-bolts for brace are listed in Table 1 of this specification.

5 Requirements
U-bolts shall comply with the physical and mechanical requirements as follows.
All dimension and requirements of U-bolts shall conform to Figure 1 of this
specification and shall be suitable for assembling each other.

5.1 Material
The body of U-bolts shall be made from steel of good quality in accordance with ISO
630 or over equivalent.
The nuts and washer shall be made from steel of good quality in accordance with ISO
898-1 or over equivalent.

5.2 Mechanical property

Minimum tensile strength of steel for the body of U-bolts shall not be less than 410
N/mm2.
When in state of installation on the pole the U-bolts is weighted horizontally with the
minimum breaking strength of Table 1 of this specification at the both nuts for 3 minutes,
no crack or deformation in all area of band.
The nuts and washer shall not be less than ISO 4.8 grade and minimum tensile strength
of steel shall be not less than 420 N/mm2.

5.3 Hot-dip galvanizing

U-bolts shall be hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ISO 1460. The mean coating
mass shall be not less than 610g/m2, but the nuts with thread and washer shall be not less
than 395 g/m2 in accordance with ISO 1461.

5/11
The surface shall be smooth and free from blemishes and any protrusion.

5.4 Design requirements

The U-bolts specified in this specification shall meet the following design
considerations:
(a) The U-bolts shall be consisted of band and bolts part, its shape shall conform to the
Figure 1 of this specification and shall be of convenient shape for attaching the crossarm
or anchor block.
(b) The bolts and nuts shall be M16 and bolts shall have enough screw length as the L
specified in Table 1 of this specification. The head of nuts shall be square or hexagonal.
(c) Dimensional tolerance in which the tolerance is not specified shall be ±0.7mm for up
to and including 35mm in dimension and over 35mm, ±2%.

6 Tests
All U-bolts are to be checked for compliance with this specification and with the
ordering quantity. GECOL reserves the rights to ask for tests to confirm the quality of U-
bolts in the presence of GECOL representatives.
All test reports of the below defined and executed tests shall be submitted to GECOL for
approval within one week after the completion of the tests.

6.1 Sampling
Test specimens shall be selected at random from each inspection lot (or articles) in
accordance with ISO 2859-1. The number of samples selected from each lot shall comply
with Table 2 of this specification.
