Tutorial 3 : Compressor
1) The air that is compressed need to be cooled down. Name the device to cool down
the air and the purposes.
2) The filter and pressure regulator is usually a separate unit. State the purpose of a
specialized filter-regulator unit?
3) What is the economical pressure for a compressor to operate with?
4) Air in a fixed volume container is initially at atmospheric pressure and 20oC. Its
temperature is then raised to 80oC. Calculate the gage pressure at the final
temperature. (21 kPa)
5) The size of a receiver tank is of great importance when selecting a compressor unit
since it will determine the amount of air that can be stored and consumed. If a
compressor unit is required to provide flow of 1.4 standard m3/min to a system for
10 min while the compressor is idle, determine the size of the receiver tank. The
compressor will operate between a pressure of 850 and 650 kPa gage. Use the
following equation for sizing air receiver. (7.03 m3)
6) From the above question, calculate the time taken to recharge the receiver from
650kPa to 850kPa if the compressor delivers 4.25 standard m3/min and the
system demand flow is 1.4 standard m3/min. (4.91 min).
7) The figure shows the simplified version of air preparation service unit. Name the
elements that are pointed out in the symbol.
8) The above figure shows a type of compressor used in the market. In its earlier
usage, this type of compressor was considered suitable only for engine-driven
portables and small-horsepower electric-motor units. Why?

9) A 75% efficient compressor delivers air at 687 kPa gage and 7.65 standard
m3/min. Calculate the cost of electricity per year if the efficiency of the electric
motor driving the compressor is 92% and the compressor operates 3000hr per
year. The cost of electricity is RM 0.11/kWh. (RM 17300/year)
