Personal Statement For Master in Urban Management Program
PROGRAM
“By far the greatest and most admirable form of wisdom is that needed to plan and beautify cities
and human communities.” – Socrates
Growing up in a “rurban” village is quite challenging. That great hills, mountains, and
plains stretching throughout the valley. A place that offer bounties with the diversified culture
and environment. On the other hand, massive urban sprawl had caused us long walk, long lines,
one-way road, and traffic congestions.
Observing how community works at its grass root level up to its highest level is
astonishing that both requires planning. One cannot work without the other. With those
observations, it helped me better comprehend the importance of planning and management.
Meaning, all must be planned thoroughly to have a better output and a better community. Since
then, day by day, things had been clearer giving me too much thought to apply from your
program. Applying from your Open University’s Master in Urban Management program blended
learning is of great help not just for me but for every individual who aspires to grow.
I believe that we need planners and managers of the future. As a newbie from different
fields (public official and architect-to-be), I also believe that there must be done. Urban planners
and managers are greatly needed the mere fact that were experiencing progressive development
due to rapid urbanization. In connection with this, politics must not be separated rather it must
work well with urban planning and management.
Purposely, my application for your program is based not just about me levelling up but
due to its uniqueness of delivery. If allowed to it would be a great joy. Moreover, if given the
chance, I will be able to create a chance to better help my community.
Upon completion of this degree, I see myself in the near future as an urban planner
helping establishing better communities where people enjoy their lives not full of complaint but
of appreciation of their natural and built environment. Also, I see myself being involved in
policy making not based on a political perspective but as a urban planner. In summary quoting
this from Chinese Warlord Sun Tzu,
“Plan for what is difficult while it is easy, do what is great while it is small. The difficult
things in this world must be done while they are easy, the greatest things in the world must be
done while they are still small. For this reason, sages never do what is great, and this is why
they achieve greatness.”
