4.1 Refer to figure 4.2 and consider a rectangular foundation. Given : B=0.91 m, L= 1.83m ,
Df=0.91m, H=0.61m , ø' = 40● , C=0 , and y = 18.08 kN/m3. Using a factor of safety of4,
determine the gross allowable load the foundation can carry.

Solution:
B = 0.91m L = 1.83m Df = 0.91m

H = 0.61m ø = 40˚ c=0 r = 18.08

qu = qNq Fqs + 1/2r BNr Frs

q = DF x r = 18.08 x 0.91 = 16.45 KN/m2

H/B = 0.61 / 0.91 = 0.6

Nq = 450

Nr = 300

From m1 = 0.45 from (fig 4.6(b) ) m2 = 0.5
