Delay Performance of GoIP Device
Delay Performance of GoIP Device
Abstract
GoIP is the abbreviated from GSM over IP. It is a new type of VoIP gateway
that allows call terminations from a VoIP network to a GSM network and vice
versa. Call connections between IP networks and GSM networks are now bridged
seamlessly to extend the voice communication coverage significantly. As known
that real time voice traffic is sensitive to delay, jitter and packet loss. Next
generation GOIP, is designed and assumed to better support real-time voice traffic
with reduced cost. However, the performance of GOIP needs more realistic
evaluations under real operating networks. There is a need to validate whether
GOIP compared to Mobile Networks does actually provide better performance and
QoS to real-time traffic. The project aims to measure quality of service of real time
GOIP traffic evaluated using Wireshark. Measurements are done several times on
different testbeds with different tests. To measure QoS of each session, Wireshark
tool is used to calculate delay.

Introduction
1.1 Introduction
GoIP is the abbreviated from GSM over IP. It is a new type of VoIP gateway
that allows call terminations from a VoIP network to a GSM network and vice
versa. Call connections between IP networks and GSM networks are now bridged
seamlessly to extend the voice communication coverage significantly [1]. As the
traditional PSTN lines are starting to disappear in developed countries and are not
going to be built extensively in under-developed countries, GSM phones are
getting more and more popular all over the world with lower and lower service
charges, the emergence of GoIP bridges the gap between the traditional telephone
networks and VoIP networks as shown in the diagram below. As a result, local and
worldwide voice communications are more convenience, lower cost, and broader
coverage [2].
Real time voice traffic is sensitive to delay, jitter and packet loss. Next
generation GOIP, is designed and assumed to better support real-time voice traffic
with reduced cost. However, the performance of GOIP needs more realistic
evaluations under real operating networks. There is a need to validate whether
GOIP compared to Mobile Networks does actually provide better performance and
QoS to real-time traffic.
The aim of this research is to evaluate and compare quality of service of real
time GOIP traffic over Wireshark analysis tool.
