2.2 ABB’s Automation Systems

ABB offers a wide range of control systems portfolio from Programmable Logic
Controllers (PLC), small to large Distributed Control Systems (DCS) to TÜV certified
Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) for an extended automation scope.

2.2.1 Overview

2.2.2 System 800xA

The IndustrialIT Extended Automation System 800xA is a comprehensive process
automation system. It covers operation and configuration of continuous and batch
control applications.

800xA System offers more than a traditional Distributed Control System. It gives you
a single application to organize and access all plant information.
As expected, you have functionality like graphics, faceplates, alarm management and
trending available.

Controllers are integrated with the system through “Connectivity packages”, which
provide access to real time data, historical data, and alarm & event data:

• Symphony Melody / AC 870P
• Freelance / AC 800F

2.2.2.1 System 800xA Options

The 800xA system functionality is divided into a Base System and a set of options,
grouped in Functional Areas. The options represent functions that can be added to the
system based on the needs of the process that should be controlled.

Operations
Provides a consistent method for accessing enterprise-wide data and for interacting
with multiple applications from any connected workstation in the plant or office.
Engineering
Integrated engineering environment supports the complete lifecycle of the automation
project, from planning, through configuration and library management, to
commissioning and operation to minimize system ownership costs.
Safety
Scalable IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 compliant SIS (Safety Instrumentation System)
that spans the entire safety loop, including SIL rated field devices, I/O modules,
controllers, and field actuators.
Information Management
Collects, stores, retrieves and presents historical, process and business data to enhance
the usefulness of data from all operations.
Batch Management
Recipe management, batch and procedural control according ISA S88.01

2.2.3 Freelance 800F

Freelance 800F is a scaleable process control system that is easy to handle and suitable
for all process control applications. It combines easy engineering with an open modern
system architecture. It is integrated by the following units:
• Control Builder F – Engineering Tool
• DigiVis – Operate & Monitor
• AC 800F controllers
• IMS – Instrument Maintenance System

Freelance 800F can be supplied fully redundant and diverse at all levels ensuring no
single common point of failure. This redundancy strategy also includes High Speed
Fieldbus layers and I/O components.
All the project data such as field device parameters, applications programs and
graphics can be stored in just one file. This ensures that the project can be backed up
easily.

2.3.1 Compact HMI 800

Compact HMI 800 interfaces to AC 800M and most other PLCs found on the market.
It is based on the Industrial IT 800xA standard system.

Compact HMI 800 connects to PLC’s through a standard OPC interface. Specialized
interfaces are available for other, popular, non-OPC-compliant controllers.

The system can be expanded to five operator workplace clients and one server
workplace with both operator and engineering functionality. Compact HMI 800 is
delivered pre-installed and preconfigured on a standard PC.

2.3.2 Panel 800

Panel 800 is an operator panel that is equipped with advanced functionality for process
and equipment control. Panel 800 offers an extensive driver library, making it
compatible with all ABB legacy control systems and most makes of PLC.

Critical information like alarms, text reports, trend data and recipes can be accessed by
remote, and alarms transmitted to the operator by e-mail or SMS.

Panel Builder 800 is used to configure the Panel 800 and contains features like:
• Project Manager contains all the information about each active project and enables
several projects to be active at the same time.
• Symbol Manager is the library in which all symbols, both pre-defined and user-
created, are stored for easy and rapid access.
• The simulator opens the panel software in a separate window to enable operators
to test-run settings.
NOTE! Up to ten different languages are supported in the same
application.

2.3.3 Compact Control Builder AC800M

Compact Control Builder is a programming tool for creating control solutions when
using the AC 800M hardware.

2.3.3.1 Migration
Within the same system version, it is possible to migrate a project from 800xA to a
Compact Control Builder project as well as to migrate a project from a Compact
Control Builder to a project in 800xA.

2.3.4 AC 800M Controller

AC 800M is a modular controller with a rich set of communication functions as well
as full redundancy and support for a large range of I/O systems.

The major features of the AC 800M are:

• Support for FOUNDATION Fieldbus and PROFIBUS
• Support for ABB Drives
• CPU redundancy
• Wide variety of communication possibilities
• High performance and large application memory
• Built-in redundant Ethernet channels
• Low power consumption
• Flexible process connection, using either local I/O or standard fieldbuses

2.3.5 I/O Connections

The I/O systems communicate with the AC 800M controllers over industry-standard
field busses.
There are a variety of I/O modules available:

S800 I/O is modularly designed, consisting of passive termination bases and I/O
modules then plug onto these bases. The S800 I/O system includes intrinsic safety I/O
modules and an associated termination base, facilitating installation of I/O stations in
potentially hazardous.
There are also all-in-one modules available – called S800L I/O – where the base and
the actual I/O module are combined into a single indivisible unit.

S900 is a remote I/O system for applications in hazardous and non-hazardous areas
that communicates with higher-level controllers using PROFIBUS. Due to its
explosion protection certificates the S900 process I/O system can be installed in both
hazardous areas and safe areas.

2.4 Limitations
When you require additional functionality for building DCS type of control solutions
you can use the Control Builder available in the Industrial IT Extended Automation
System 800xA
The 800xA Control Builder (CBM Professional) adds the following functions to the
set of functions available in Compact Control Builder:
• Online Upgrade
• Load Evaluate Go
• Batch handling
• Audit Trail
• SFC Viewer
• High Integrity Controller for SIL applications
• CI860 for FF HSE, and CI862 for TRIO I/O
• Information routing via HART protocol
• Security

NOTE! Already-made Compact Control Builder solutions can be

moved to an 800xA system. Provided that you have
purchased an additional license, you can open your PLC
projects in a Control Builder Professional workplace.
