COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus Sessional-II Exam - Semester FALL 2020

This document provides instructions for an exam on interfacing a microprocessor system. It contains two questions. Question 1 asks the student to: [1] Create a schematic diagram interfacing an 8088 microprocessor with an 8254 timer using address decoding, and [2] Write an assembly language program to generate a specified output waveform. Question 2 asks the student to: [1] Provide a labeled schematic diagram integrating a 512KB EEPROM with an 8088 microprocessor using line decoding, where the available memory chip is 64KB starting at address X0000H, and [2] Give the starting and ending addresses for each memory chip in binary and hexadecimal numbers. The document provides examples for calculating the starting address X

Sessional-II Exam– Semester FALL 2020

Course Title: Microprocessor Systems and Interfacing Course Code: EEE 342 Credit Hours: 4(3,1)
Course Instructor: Moazzam Ali Sahi Program Name: BS Electrical Engineering (E)
th
Semester: 5 Batch: FALL18 Section: A Date: 7th December, 2020
Time Allowed: 90 Minutes Maximum Marks: 30
Student’s Name: Reg. No.

Important Instructions / Guidelines:

• This is a closed note, closed book examination.
• Attempt all the questions; there is NO choice in the questions.
• Please do your own work. PLAGIARISM will result in F-Grade in the course.
• Submit your work within the time notified.
• Your work must be uploaded in PDF form with name FA18-BEE-XXX.pdf
• Write your Name, Registration number and Signature on every page.
• You need to be available with your camera ON all the time on MS Teams.
• Only handwritten paper will be accepted.
• Use of computer is strictly prohibited

Question 1: [CLO2-PLO3-C5] [Marks = 8+7]

An 8254 Timer is interfaced with 8088 Microprocessor. The input and output waveforms are given in
Figure 1 and 2 respectively.

Figure 1 Input Timing Diagram of 8254 timer/counter

Figure 2 Timing Diagram of 8254 timer/counter Clock

You are required to

a) Create a complete schematic diagram showing 8088 and 8254 Timer interfaced using NAND
gate address decoding technique.
b) Write an Assembly Language Program to generate the output waveform

NOTE:
Address of 8254 is generated using the criteria given at the end of the paper

Question 2: [CLO2-PLO3-C5] [Marks = 10+5]

Integrate 512KB EEPROM with 8088 Microprocessor using Line decoder. Whereas the available
memory chip is of 64KB and memory map starts at X0000H. You are required to provide

a) A completely labelled schematic diagram

b) Starting-ending addresses for each memory chip in binary and hexadecimal numbers.
Address generation:

Whereas the address/starting address, X is the hexadecimal value of your registration number in such
a way that you need to add your registration number to make it a single digit. You may check the
following examples for reference.

1. Registration Number: FA18-BSEE-005

X = 0+0+5 = 5 (Starting Address = 50000H)

2. Registration Number: FA18-BSEE-144

X = 1+4+4 = 9 (Starting Address = 90000H)

3. Registration Number: FA18-BSEE-039

X = 0+3+9 = 12
= 1+2 = 3 (Starting Address = 30000H)

Only for 8254 Timer

As 8254 should be interfaced at an address divisible by 4 so remember to choose a smaller address to
compensate this issue.

e-g: If after applying the above criteria your registration X results in 5, then your starting address for
8254 should be 4, for 9 it should be 8 and so on.
