Department of Mechanical Engineering: Machine Design & CAD-II Lab (MEEN-3238)

This lab report describes designing a spur gear with involute teeth profile in SolidWorks. The report outlines the 8 steps to design the gear using only 4 input parameters: number of teeth, module, pressure angle, and face width. Key steps include drawing circles to define the pitch, addendum, and dedendum, drawing the involute tooth profile using construction lines and the pressure angle, mirroring the profile, and extruding the base circle and tooth profiles to create the final 3D gear model. The objective was to practice 3D drawing of a gear with an involute teeth profile using the standard construction method.

Semester 6th
Lab Session 4
1. Objective:
To practice 3D Drawing-02 which involves designing a spur gear with given parameters and
an involute teeth profile.

2. Involute Teeth Profile Spur Gear Design

The involute profile is most common used in Gear designed and is generated from
base circle. There are many ways to create gear and many times we ignore the
standard construction method to save time. This should be avoided. So we have
created this model which is equation driven.
That means we only need 4 parameters to define the whole spur gear design.
• Number of Teethes
• Module
• Pressure Angle (usually 20º)
• Face Width
3. Design calculation for Spur gear in SolidWorks

Step 1
Using calculation draw pitch circle, Addendum circle and dedundum circle as
shown here;
Step 2
Now draw vertical line passing through pitch circle and also draw another at some angle. In
smart dimensions click on Global variables and select the pressure angle (pa). As show below,

Step 3
So now draw a circle that is tangent to the line and annotate as Base circle as shown
Step 4

Now draw two lines and make them equal and from that point draw four construction lines and
also make them equal as shown below

Step 5
Draw a central line and then draw a center point arc to make teeth profile and now draw another
line with circular pitch angle (CPa). Also draw the backlash of 0.1mm by using offset command
and then mirror the profile as shown below.
Step 6
Now draw the circle of radius 5mm with a keyhole as shown below;

Step 7
Now extrude the base circle and tooth profile. By using extrude boss and extrude cut commands
we get following shapes.
Step 8
Again using previous sketch and by using circular sketch pattern command get the following
sketch and extrude it.
