Towards the end of the First World War the German branch of THE GRAMOPHONE
COMPANY was nationalized. Most of the Turkish, Greek and Arabian pressing masters
were still stored at the Hanover factory. After the war the DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON
AKTIEN-GESELLSCHAFT began issuing original recordings of THE GRAMOPHONE
COMPANY on the POLYPHON label (25cm). Around the same time a number of these
recordings were released in the USA on the OPERA DISC label (25cm and 30cm).
According to the label, the A-side of this record is Çiftetelli Gazel (kemençe ile). In fact the
correct title is Hüseyni Taksim (kemençe ile) (side number: 9526 – coupling number 13413).

Although the text on the (“Hüseyni Taksim, tanbur ile”) label suggests this is a Tanburi
Cemil Bey recording by THE GRAMOPHONE COMPANY, it is in fact the song ‘Atımı
bağladım ben bir ormana’ by Hafız Aşir Efendi. The flipside - according to the label Tanburi
Cemil Beys’s Garip Hicazkâr (yay ile tanbur) - is in reality ‘Külhanbey Kantosu’, also by
Hafız Aşir Efendi (original ODEON side number: 31972). Besides, The Gramophone
Company never produced 27cm (10¾-inch) records…

For some time I was under the impression that this ‘Djemil Bey’ was Tanburi Cemil Bey.
Although Tanburi Cemil Bey’s staple instruments were the tanbur, the violoncello, the
kemençe and the lavta, one can imagine a multi-instrumentalist of his stature trying his hand
at other instruments as well. In this case the smallest type of ney, the nısfiye.
I sent the recording to Cemal Ünlü who consulted ney-players Niyazi Sayın and Aziz Şenol
Filiz. Both men were adamant in their judgement: this definitely was not Tanburi Cemil Bey.
Recently Cemal informed me that he had established the existence of a ney-player, called
‘Nısfiye Cemil’ and sent a scan of an article by Nurettin Selçuk (see next page).

In my notes I found a remark that this is in reality TCB’s Hicazkâr Taksim (tanbur solo)
originally on FAVORITE 1-54251 (matrix number: 5939-t). Source: Cengiz Şahin.
Ahmet Şükrü (Bahçekapı –Tramvay Yolu, Constantinople) was the representative of
Lindström labels, such as FAVORITE, ODEON and LYROPHON (on the label: “CHUKRI
BEY NAMINE”). Many FAVORITE and LYROPHON recordings begin with the
exclamation “Chukri Bey namına!”
Ahmet Şükrü also issued records under his own name: INTERNATIONALE CHUKRI
RECORD. For this label he drew on Lindström recordings (ODEON, FAVORITE,
LYROPHON etc.). Şükrü himself even recorded a number of sides on the FAVORITE label.

several complete sets of Tanburi Cemil Bey recordings from ORFEON masters for the
Istanbul and Ankara Municipal Conservatories. This (singlesided) copy was made for the
İstanbul Belediyesi Konservatuarı.
