In Christian or Hebrew writings…
- scripture is generally used as a shorthand for a
more specific terms (especially Canonical Scripture and
ecclesiastical scripture).
- any of the writings of all the peoples in all the
world, hence it is the least descriptive term one could use
to refer to a class of writings or a particular work.

FIVE MODERN
FILIPINO VALUES
1. Pananalig (Faith)
Madonna and Child
epitomize the kind of
faith every Filipino
carries in the heart
an assurance that the
Divine Being watches
over each and every
one of us.
A Madonna (Italian: [maˈdɔnna]) is a representation of Mary, either alone or with
her child Jesus. These images are central icons for both the Catholic and
Orthodox churches. The word is from Italian ma donna, meaning 'my lady'.
2. Katapatan(Faithfulness/Honesty)

Resembles marriage bands . This arrangement

celebrates the modern Filipino hero’s faithfulness to
husband or wife, as well as faithfulness to country
and all the ideals for our Republic.
3. Pag-aaruga (Nurturing)

Every Filipino child grows and learns

under the wing of a mentor who instills in
the child the sense of love , compassion,
heroism and courage.
4. Kasipagan

Fruits of the earth spring forth only through our industry and it is
only through our work that we will able to achieve the rebuilding of
our mother country, the task of every one of us, modern
Philippine heroes all.
5. Tibay ng Loob (Courage)
Filipinos must be:
proud of being puspusang-loob.
Mapamaraan(resourceful) and
mapanuklas (ingenous).
Filipinos know their competence
(kilala ang kakayahan).
“Kayang-kaya mo ‘yan” is the
encouraging phrase of the
Filipinos to do their best through
tiyaga.
imbued with lakas ng loob (self-confidence or self
reliance).
 In their desire for social acceptance, Filipinos must
be:
Marunong makibagay
Marunong makiisa
Marunong makilahok
Marunong makipagpalagayang loob
Marunong makisalamuha
Marunong makisangkot
Marunong makitungo
Marunong makisama
 Filipinos are likened to a bamboo which
symbolizes flexibility, endurance and
harmony with nature.
 Bahala na attitude should not be judged
as a fatalistic resignation or withdrawal
from an engagement or crisis but
because of their kababaang-loob.

It is manifested by their daop-palad

habit.
Their relationship with God is the
source of their malinis at tapat na
panunungkulan.
Moral Values
1. Mother and father are the first line of God
2. Time is very precious.
3. Sleep is for relaxation but not for enjoyment.
4.Good character, depth of knowledge, and positive
intelligence are the real assets of man.
5.Performing duties, fulfilling responsibilities, keeping up his
words, and not hurting others are the characteristics of a
gentleman.
6.Love and care are the two eyes of God.
7.Love without self interest, is the greatest in the world.
8.Bible is second to father’s advice.
9.Life is an opportunity to learn from experiences.
10.Understanding feelings makes friendship.
Factors deteriorating
Filipino Values
Filipino Families
today are more
exposed to a
growing number of
diverse life
threatening
problems than any
other generation has
ever been.
DISINTEGRATION OF FAMILY

Increasing fragility of marriage.

• Among the many factors which contribute to the fragility
of urban Filipino families is the loosening control on
the young.

• Today young people are more independent and are

allowed greater freedom. The increased mobility of
young people for recreation and leisure purposes has
made it difficult for parents to monitor them.
Delinquency among adolescents

Juvenile Delinquency- can be explained by the failure of

social control which is one of the responsibilities of the family
Children and young adults use drugs
The most common reason given by children and young
adults is that these prohibited drugs are relatively easy to get.
Pushers roam neighborhoods where children could be easily
lured and victimized.

Other reasons which are more serious and should be given

immediate attention are:
1. Abusive parents
2. Family problems
3. Peer pressure
4. insecurity
5. The feeling that parents have given up on the child
6. Accessibility or visibility of some kind of inhalant in the home
such as rugby or thinner.
PARENTAL ABSENTEEISM
Today, the family is broken
because of the diminishing opportunities
for them to be one.

The real meaning of family has

been distorted. Family is equated with
material possessions. Many parents leave
their young children to seek better economic
opportunities.

Many parents replace their

presence with the latest gadgets.

Absence of parents destroys the

solidarity in the family.
Economic Difficulties
Although it has been acknowledged
that money is not the most important
thing in the family, we have to admit
that economic difficulties is one of
the biggest challenges being faced
by many families today.

As a result of this, children are

malnourished, cannot go to school and
instead work to augment family income
at a very young age. Children and
young people in the streets are
exposed to all kinds of hazards
(addiction, exposure to toxic
substances and pollution) with
negative impact on their health and
overall development.
ABSENCE OF FAMILY GOALS

The absence of values and goals to guide family decisions

and activities can cause members to lose sight of what is truly
worthwhile.

Values are strong feelings or beliefs about issues, ideas or

things that are considered important by the person.

Individuals and families have different values. It influences a

person’s most important decisions about friends, sexual
relationship, family education, work and money.

Failure of parents to recognize higher meaning and purpose

of the family can lead to materialism, instant gratification and
pleasure as life’s chief goals.
RISING INCIDENCE OF EARLY
SEXUAL INVOLVEMENT
AND TEENAGE
PREGNANCIES/MARRIAGES

Too Early Sexual Involvement

This refers to engaging in some
form of sexual encounter or sexual
intercourse at an early age.
Too early sexual involvement often
leads to WASTED lives.

W eak self-image
A dolescent or teenage pregnancy
S exually transmitted infections
T een marriage
E motional wounds
D isrupted goals
STRONG NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA
Media has a negative influence on the family, especially on the youth
Too much exposure to violent crimes
and sex in the media brings damage to
the upbringing of children.

Because of media, the interpersonal

relationship in the family seems to
have been neglected. Family ties that
used to be very close are being
threatened.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO REVITALIZE
FILIPINO VALUES

O pen and honest communication between spouses and

children should always be encourage
V iolence or any form of abuse should not be tolerated
E mpowerment of family members

R elationship of family members must be strengthened

C ommunication, relationship, decision- making and
problem solving skills of family members should be
developed and harnessed
O utings or get–together with the family should be
done regularly
M edia exposures of the children should be closely
monitored
E conomic activities that contribute to family welfare
should be ensured
S pirituality of family members should be nurtured.
OUR CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE.
Adolescents have tremendous capacity to contribute to
country’s development . Parents should work hard to
develop their child and empower them to make the
right choices and responsible decisions
LIVE OUT OUR VALUES;
IF WE WALK OUR TALK,
WE BECOME MORE CONFIDENT
IN OURSELVES AND
IN OUR DEALING WITH OTHERS WITH
RESPECT AND LOVE.
Watch out what you see, they become your
thoughts.
Watch out your thoughts, they become your words.
Watch out your words, they become your actions.
Watch out your actions, they become your habits.
Watch out your habits, they become your values.
Watch out your values, they become your destiny
which means your life.
