PART I
1) A liquid of density 1000kg/m3 flows through a pipe diameter 1 inch at velocity of 1.5
m/s, given friction factor 0.00025, calculate the frictional pressure drop per unit
length? (2marks)
(a) 88.5 N/m2 (b) 100 N/m2 (c) 80.5 N/m2 (d) 10 N/m2
5) Calculate the total power requirement for a mass flow rate of 5 kg/s, and a static head
of 5 m. Efficiency of pump is 70%. (2marks)
PART II
1) Select suitable valve types for the following applications:
a) The valves needed to isolate a pump and provide emergency manual control on
a by-pass loop.
b) Manual control of the water flow into a tank used for making up batches of
sodium hydroxide solution. ( 5 marks)
2) Oil flows in a pipe 80 mm bore with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. The mean surface
roughness is 0.02 mm and the length is 60 m. The dynamic viscosity is 0.005 N
s/m2 and the density is 900 kg/m3. Determine the pressure loss. (3 marks)
3) Calculate the maximum membrane stress in the wall of shell having a cylindrical
shape of inside diameter 2 m. The vessel wall is 2 mm thick and subject to an
internal pressure of 5 bar. (5 marks)
4) A horizontal cylindrical tank with hemispherical ends, is used to store liquid
chlorine at 10 bar. The vessel is 4 m internal diameter and 20 m long. Estimate the
minimum wall thickness required to resist this pressure, for the cylindrical section
and the heads. Take the design pressure as 12 bar and the allowable stress for the
material as 110 MN/m2. (5 marks)
