Ged109 Problem

The document discusses gender discrimination and inequality faced by LGBT individuals when using public restrooms. It cites studies showing that 60% of transgender people avoid public restrooms due to safety fears, and 12% experience verbal assault, 1% physical assault, and 1% sexual assault. The Philippines similarly lacks protections for gender diversity as seen in an incident where a transgender woman was harassed in the women's restroom. Even though the world steps forward on acknowledging the vast gender identities that we

have in this world, it is apparent that gender inequalities are still occurring in this time and it

became a treat to our safety and right privileges because of this issue. One of the basic needs of a

person is privacy, whether it will be private or public. We have restrooms in the comfort of our

home as a place of privacy, by which there is no gender distinction in using the restroom in your

home. However, in terms of public restrooms, society establishes restrooms in every building in

the place it is visible on the Boca National Plumbing Code that establishments whether

restaurants, nightclubs, and places of public assembly are required to have public toilet facilities.

Restrooms are based on two genders, A male designated restroom and a female designated

restrooms, it may seem that it is a proper way of Identifying people who will use the designated

restrooms, however LGBT members and other people that their gender identity is not aligned in

the gender norms of the people face challenges when using public bathrooms.

According to the study of 2015 US transgender survey, it stated that almost 60% of those

transgender people that take the survey stated that they avoid using public restrooms because of

the fear for their safety and at the same time others experiences harassment, physical and verbal

because of their gender identity and also according to the study conducted by the National Center

for Transgender Equality on public restrooms in 2015, stated that on their findings that 12% of

the transgender people experienced verbal assault while using the restroom 1% of the

transgender people who take the survey experience physical assault and 1% experienced sexual

assault and lastly 9% are denied on using the restrooms by other people who uses the restroom

because of not conforming on the gender norms that the society follows.
In the Philippines, it is visible that we are also experiencing the same problems of gender

discrimination and gender inequalities as other countries are experiencing. In 2019, An issue

sparks debate because of the incident involving Gretchen Diez, a trans woman that is harassed by

the sanitary crew because of entering the women's restrooms. It gives way for the government

and also politicians to bring back the debate regarding the Sogie Equality Bill and also the Anti

Discrimination Bill. None of this bill has been approved because of multiple debates that our

politicians have. As of now, the Philippines are lacking law in terms of protecting gender

diversity or pursuing gender Equalities in different aspects of society. Every day, LGBT

members are still subjected to abuses because of their gender non conforming. Even though the

Philippines does not have any National law that could help in solving this problem, there are still

ways on how we can resolve these issues.
