Source Population

This document discusses sampling methods for a study on patterns of antibiotic use among patients undergoing major surgery at a hospital in Ethiopia. The source population is all patients undergoing major surgery at the hospital. The study population will be patients selected from this group. Stratified random sampling is identified as the most appropriate method, with surgeries stratified into types to obtain a more representative sample and identify inappropriate antibiotic use by surgery type. Proportionate allocation is preferred for stratified random sampling.

1.

Select one research topic and specify the source population, Study population and the
most appropriate method of sampling for the study
a. Title: Pattern of antibiotics use for prophylaxis among patients who undergone major surgery
at Jimma University Referral Hospital, Jimma, Oromia reginal state, Ethiopia.

b. Population

Source Population
All patients who undergone major surgery at Jimma University Referral Hospital

Study Population
patients who undergone major surgery and get chance of selection.

c. Appropriate Sampling method

Stratified random sampling method.

NB: we have different major surgeryms, so in order to get more representative sample we have to
use them as strata. Because

1. appropriate antibiotic should be given depending on the site of surgery.

2. We will get more representative sample

3. we will identify the area of inappropriate use of antibiotics

Appendectomy, Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), Inguinal hernia, Small bowel obstruction
(SBO), large bowel obstruction (LBO)

There are two approaches to stratification; proportionate and disproportionate.

Proportionate allocation: -irrespective of the sample size of the population, the sampling fraction
will remain uniform across all the strata.

Disproportionate allocation: -the success of this sampling method depends on the researcher’s
precision at fraction allocation. If the allotted fractions aren’t accurate, the results may be biased
due to the overrepresented or underrepresented strata.
Therefore, I prefer to use proportionate allocation
