Complex Engineering Assignemt Power Plant Session 2017

This document assigns students to design a 10 MW thermal power plant and analyze key aspects in a report. It lists functional requirements for the plant, including boiler pressure, steam temperature and turbine efficiency. Students must study environmental impacts, suitable fuels, and compare plant cycles using software. The report should discuss the design process, software usage, cycle comparisons and environmental impact. It is due on January 12, 2021 and will be evaluated based on the report and a viva.

Power Plants [MEEN-4151]

(Session 2017)
COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEM ASSIGNMENT
Power plants are used to generate electricity for the smooth running of industries and domestic
life. Electricity is the basic need for industries. The electricity is obtained from national grid station
by industries but many industries have their own thermal power plants as well for meeting the
energy needs of the shift and in case of load shedding. Therefore, you are required to design a
thermal power plant with the capacity of 10 MW. Also study the following aspects for designing
the power plant.
a. Environmental aspects
b. Suggest appropriate fuel
Functional requirements of thermal power plant include:
i. Boiler / Heat exchanger outlet pressure should be ≥ 6000 kPa
ii. Temperature of steam entering the turbine should be ˃ 320℃
iii. Steam condenser pressure operates on 20 kPa
iv. Isentropic efficiency of steam turbine is 90%
v. Air temperature entering the gas turbine is 20℃
vi. Air pressure entering the gas turbine is 101kPa
vii. Isentropic efficiency of gas turbine is 90%
viii. Isentropic efficiency of compressor is 85%
ix. Maximum gas cycle temperature is 1100℃
x. The compressor pressure ratio is 8
Assumption(s) can be made for any missing data along with justification(s).

Deliverables
i. Understanding the design process, its implementation and related complete discussion in
the report.
ii. Using of software (including excel, EES, Matlab or any other relevant software) & that file
should be submitted in soft form too.
iii. A complete comparison among simple (steam / gas) cycle, reheating, intercooling,
regeneration and combined cycle
iv. Impact of power plant on the environment
v. Proper report formatting is required.

Instructions:
• Submit printed report with complete thermal design and cost analysis.
• Every group must be comprising of two students.
• Each group will do its own work and work should not be copied / pasted.
• Evaluation will be made on the basis of report and viva.
